Keith Olbermann Leaves ESPN for YouTube Political Show

The anchor says he wants to dive back into politics ahead of the election.
Keith Olbermann is leaving ESPN — again — but the parting is amicable.

The veteran sports- and newscaster is departing the Disney-owned network to host a political show on YouTube. Olbermann said in a series of tweets Tuesday afternoon that he asked for and received an early release from his contract so he can restart his political commentaries.

"I have adhered to [ESPN's] desire for their sportscasters to refrain from purely political commentary (an approach with which I largely agree), and they have now agreed with my desire to go and serve my country by focusing my energy on political commentary," Olbermann wrote.

This is Keith Olbermann's third time doing a political show.

The economics of YouTube are very different from cable TV. People will be able to watch any time, not necessarily at 5PM. They can watch as often as they want, and share with others. More importantly the viewers can be allowed to post comments about what he says, and those comments will drive views which factor into how much he gets paid. So if he's controversial, and we know he is, he'll make a lot of money, and won't have to deal with any corporate suits.
