Kelly McKay has moved

Kelly has started doing her afternoon show on WZPL over ISDN from her new home in (I think) South Carolina. So far it sounds good. If anybody can pull this off, I think she's smart enough to sound local even though she no longer lives here. Long term however...can you still be local sounding in a year or 2 years if you aren't stuck in the same weather, going to the same events and fighting the same road construction as the rest of us? Listen this week, and tell me what you think. I know this is being done elsewhere, but is this the way of the future for jocks?

That's alright - she can do like that 'classic rock' station in town does - get her info from the WIBC website!

Agreed, Jack 104.5 DOES sound bad being voicetracked virtually all day every day.

I thought 104.5 was mostly live now. Clear Channel had X 103 nights voicetracked out of Florida for a short time a few years ago. The guy doing the tracking hated it and used as much profanity and over-the-edge material as he could. That put a quick end to his shift on X.

Have you heard this yet? The quality is terrible. Maybe
they are working on improving the connection quality..if
it's ISDN it really is a bad connection or setting. It sounds
like she is on bad remote connection when coming out of music.

Take a listen...and you'll hear what I mean. This can't last
long....unless they improve it. Plus...the listeners will soon
figure it out...

Having heard her show a few times in the past although I admit I don't listen to WZPL that often, I have to ask if Entercom doesn't have better use for the kind of cash it takes to make this kind of broadcast happen? I believe the hardware for ISDN is in the several thousands of dollars price range, plus every call to or from her home via ISDN is long distance. I'm sure they like her over there on N. Meridian, but that said, from what I've heard of her on the air and from looking at the ratings, it would seem there's an unneccesary expense waiting to be cut there. If she has left Indy permanently, a quick help wanted ad would certainly fill that position with someone equally as mediocre, and at a cheaper price. Plus it isn't like they don't have any stations in whatever city she moved to that she could work at.

I used to know Kelly back when I was working with the Indianapolis Indians on WXNT. Sometimes she would be getting done with her show while I was going in to run the games. She was very nice and friendly. When you are a new person in a new building that always makes you feel a little more welcome. I wish her the best whatever she ends up doing.

I thought Kelly McKay worked the Bowling Green, Kentucky market. I swear I heard her on a trip to the south earlier this year.

Not that this will shock anyone, but X103 nights is still voice tracked from what I've been told. The gal they have on their now is (again) at another Clear Channel station in anther state. Matter of fact, from what I was told by someone (who discontinued their employment at Clear Channel recently), is that with the exception of morning and afternoon drive, the rest of the dayparts are voice tracked. This includes mid-days, nights and all weekend long. However, Q95 (except for Alice Cooper) has someone in studio thru the week and is voice tracked on all of their weekends. Again, no suprise.

I did notice the drop in audio quality when she moved. To me the mic has no warmth, and you can definitely hear the digital compression of the audio. My wife, who is not a radio person said "It's different, but I could get used to it." My bet is that most listeners don't care that much about the technical end of it, if the content of the show stays basically the same. I also see they've set up a special toll-free listener line just for her show.

I noticed her saying things like "on my way in to work today..." trying to make it sound like she was driving to work. I'd caution her to never specifically point out to her listeners that she's moved, but to be very careful to not actually lie about it. Don't tell them "I went to the Colts game..." or "I was shoveling that snow yesterday" because some of her listeners are going to realize that she's not living here any more. And if you lie to them, you've completely lost your credibility.

Bottom line: I think this will work. I asked myself if I could do a relatable show in a market where I used to work, where I lived for a long time, where I knew every street and restaurant. Yeah, I think I could do it, and I think Kelly can too.

The audio is similar to how Stan Solomon sounded on WXLW when they were using tieline equipment. Not ISDN quality.

Quality is fine for remotes but she could just as easily use wme or an ISDN line. tieline is using POTS and DSL now.

There is a board called IndyMoms where she still posts and it was mum about her leaving town. The story was that her father passed away and that was why she was off the air.

I like it when Greg Garrison does his show sometimes from home and every now and then, you'll hear the dog barking in the background.

Better than the Garrison dog barking......

When you could hear pots & pans rattling around or the toilet flushing during The Bob Knight Show. ;D

I, too, had a kitchen/bath in an old apartment...

;)

The better time was when he was cleaning his handgun and the barrel discharged. Had to install a delay for the show for Bob and he didn't ever take calls live.

Re: Kelly McKay has moved [The Bob Knight angle]

Sources told me that Knight Show affiliates were upset at the must carry for Knight's show, as Coach Knight would often be eating dinner during the show, and would then talk with his mouth full, or making obvious chewing noises.

Most people learned that was bad etiquette at what. Age 5? Age 7?

Of course, most people also can't coach a basketball team like Knight does, but that's a subject for another thread on a completely different board, at another time.
