Kelly Research Calls in Tulsa

Got a call from Kelly Music Research the other night. Before I excused myself from the survey I asked him what he was researching and he said "two types of oldies for 35-54". You had to rate two groups of classic rock/pop artists. Group 1 was Beatles and some early 70's stuff while group 2 was Elton John and some late 70's/80's pop.

I know Clear Channel has been a Kelly client in the past, so maybe KOOL is trying to figure out where to go next musically? Maybe Star is shoring up it's list? Who knows but I thought it was interesting.

Clear Channel usually partners with Critical Mass Media. Kelly has been a darling of Times-Shamrock. Sounds like The Sound is sounding out the market.

Mr. Inventor....as someone that is well versed in this format, what do you think they are looking to find with the research project?
It seems that KQLL has left a mile-wide hole in the market for 60s/early 70s oldies. Do you think KTSO may try to take that position in the market? It would seem like the format is being handed to them on a silver platter.

Do you still work with KTSO? I have admired your work over the years in other markets. Tulsa may be years away from PPM, but it looks like the oldies format may not be dead based on some of the early PPM data. If KQLL doesn't go back to oldies soon, it may be blocked and have to switch formats eventually. I do like the TRUE OLDIES concept from ABC & Scott Shannon. They were running it weekends on KQLL before the classic top-40 format.

Journal Guy: Thanks for the kind words, they are appreciated. And, no, my contract with KTSO ended in December of 2005, although we continued to work on the project through April of 06. Before I go further, let me say on the record that Jan Dean had a huge effect on the startup of The Sound and should be credited for a lot of the success of that launch. I am extremely happy with the fact that we drew to within a share of KJSR in six months (25-54) with not one thin dime of outside marketing support on what was essentially a new signal. And Randy Young may be the coolest guy on the planet. They are blessed to have him in the house.

It would seem to me that The Sound could spread a bit older if they are able to sell the numbers it would get, and therein lies the problem. A lot of those kinds of decisions ultimately are made to fit the current operating dynamic in the sales office. With KTSO and KMYZ, growing older on KTSO would make it that much harder for its (more established) younger targeted sales force to be effective.

Now, if KTSO were in Renda's stable, it could make sense to move it a bit older and sell in concert with KBEZ...but that ain't the situation.

ABC seems to be making a go of True Oldies in Chicago...it'll be interesting to see how that progresses under Citadel. Certainly, WOGL has proven in PPM that oldies aren't dead yet, although, to be fair, they have moved into the 70s pretty heavily as have the other CBS FMs in the format (WOMC, WODS, and my old alma mater, KLUV).

It seems that you and Jan did a nice job at sign-on. The current version of 94.1 isn't famous for anything. I'm sure that the research project may give them some insight on a direction. Congrats on your success in Tulsa.

It amazes me that Shamrock hasn't sold. You brought up the cluster sales strategy using KBEZ as the example. You would think that after years of losing money in Tulsa they (Shamrock) would sell to Renda. At one time, KMYZ was a real player in the market. I was told that they beat KMOD a few times during their prime.

Do any of your clients stream? Please post the URLs if you don't mind. Would be cool to listen.

Thanks

Two of them stream, but I'm only at liberty to divulge one of them. I can tell you that the other one is one of the highest ranked broadcast streams on Live 365. The other is WRHQ in Savannah, GA, a Rock AC/AAA hybrid and the only locally owned station in the market. They are at www.wrhq.com .

KMYZ has a really good bunch of folks and a great heritage. I would have loved to help them work on it, as they really are the one station in town that could, with the proper tools and guidance, give KMOD a run for its money.

With the right leadership, KMYZ could pull it off again. I figure KMOD could loan them a few shares and still do okay? ;D

I'm not a fan of KMOD. A bunch of old crap played over and over and over again. At least they got
the call letters right. They used to be good. The morning show is still great! It's time for them to
step it up a notch musically to more of an active rock approach. I can't really listen to them much
anymore outside of the morning show.
