I have made a few trips to the Valley and have noticed 94.5 out of Three Rivers has their transmitter running over the past few weeks (no ID or programs that I have heard). Not sure if 94.5 will be a broadcast reality or the transmitter has been turned on for a few weeks to maintain the license.
I heard it transmitting for 94-5 The Buzz (Houston) back in August. It had to be that tower, because I was going away from Houston but picking up the signal stronger than when I was actually closer to Houston.
I think you were hearing KTBZ because of tropo ducting. KEMA filed for special temporary authority to remain silent that same month; here's an excerpt from the request for the STA:
KEMA was taken off the air on August 7, 2009 as a result of damage to the stations transmission line apparently caused [by] what appears to be bullet hole penetration to upper sections of the coax cable. Damage of this nature has occurred in the past and it is now necessary to make repairs or replacement that go beyond a “quick fix”
I just checked KEMA's status, and one website has the station listed as "currently off the air." I feel bad for Roy E. Henderson, but he needs to be a little bit more imaginative when declaring formats.
I think an alternative format would have worked here. Sure, you have 99-5 KISS and 97-7 Rock, but if someone were to plug in a station that was 101X-ish in this area, I think it would have done decent.
Young adults in the "brush country" like alternative too, Fred. I lived there in the late '90s and spoke with a lot of people who could barely pick up 101X and wished that area had an alternative format.
Your comment reminds me of the old days when all the high school kids said they loved the new album rock station. But when they filled out their diaries in private the local Top 40 was still king by a huge margin. But I guess PPM will reveal all.
Don't get me wrong, Fred, I don't think an alternative format would be #1 in the Karnes-Wilson-Gonzales Tri-County area, but I feel like it could be successful.
