After a long battle with COPD, Ken Fairchild passed away last night with his family united around him. Not as well known as Alex Burton, Ken did some of his best work behind the scenes. His talent and drive inspired all of us to do better. He expected more out of us than we thought he had a right to expect. I wish everyone could have that experience of growth and professional development that comes from a News Director who can do every job in the newsroom better than his staff. He brought a higher quality of radio news to DFW. And throughout his tenure as News Director and again as General Manager, he was a dutch uncle to me.
He did the New York Times Crossword in ink every day. When he started his corporate crisis-communications firm, he bested Mike Wallace and "60 Minutes" more than once. And he was hysterically funny.
Too much more to say about the best boss I ever had. I was privileged to work for him.
