Ken Jackson, Z100 Providence

Hey, everyone..

It's been a while since I have frequented this forum, but I've recently been inspired to revisit. I see some of the same players are still around, even after 10 years, talking about the same stuff that doesn't really matter. I am sure it matters to the posters, of course. Some may know me personally. Some may not. But I am sure ALL will have an opinion......

Anyway, I ended up taking some time to upload an air check on the Zshare web hosting service. It's an 13 minute tape of my time doing mornings on Citadel's Ill-Fated Z100 Providence, circa, Spring/Summer 2000.

I still believe that it was "serendipity" that I ended up at Wampanoag Trail doing weekends at PRO-FM in the Fall 1999. Six months later, with timing and dumb luck (ok, MAYBE some talent) that I ended up doing mornings..at least for a short time, til this dual frequency station ended up Spanish and the FM side of 630WPRO. Personality conflicts and politics played into the demise of me, and then the station. Some close to the station know the story. Others will speculate. I am an open book, so feel free to blog away..... I still will always thank Tony Bristol for bringing me into the fold. He is a great guy, and never did I bash him in all the time after I worked for Citadel. I am sure some would say that I would have a hard time saying the same of others in the building at that time! :)

Take a listen.

It's stuff no one has probably heard in quite a long time. I welcome all opinions, criticisms, and critiques. While I haven't cracked a mic in close to 8 years, I do miss the creative aspect of the business, something that is rare to be found these days.... Growing up, I listened to Matty in the Morning from Boston, Chuck Stevens, the World's Oldest Living Teenager, and even Paul and Al (later I was honored to work at Eastern Avenue in the same studio as Fuller and Milukas!)

I hope everyone has a Happy 2011. Here's a wish that radio WILL someday be as fun as the above sounds.

Regards,

Ken Jackson

PS Those of you know how to contact me on Facebook, if they would like. Funny. 10 years ago, Facebook didn't exist. And now, it's everyone's favorite time-waster!! LOL

Ken,
When I heard you had posted here, I thought ya know, I wanna hear what people are still saying about Z100. It's been what, 10 plus years since we were on the air there. But I enjoyed the gig. I left New England in 2001, and have stayed busy in radio, as well as my own biz. But I sure wish things would have been different then, and the Bullshit that was, never happened. I really thought the format had a future if tweaked, maybe with or without Jack Casey. No offense to Mighty Mike or Tony Bristol/Jack Casey for casting him in the morning show after you Ken, but it didn't really work well. I thought even I sounded pretty good, personality wise, filling in after you were let go. This biz has always been this way! I started on the air at 15 in the Midwest. Corporate, or mom and pop, they all have issues in managing. One thing that is a constant is the enormous Ego's that come with certain jocks who have been around forever, and become PD's, always wondering in private, if they really should even have the job. All I ever wanted to do is have fun entertaining people. I love the excitement of contests, remotes, promotions, ect. I really would have done it for free.....Oh yeah, I did...lol

Precisely, Lee!

Thanks for chiming in...and thanks for your vocal talents that made the morning show for the first 6 months of Z100's existence!

You rock!

Ken

Ken & Lee,

Hello old friends! When you guys were on the air on Z100, I was a weekend board op at WPRO. I only chatted with you once Ken, but I do remember hanging out with Lee for about 10 minutes here and there when he did 6am - 10am on the weekend.

One thing I remember clearly was the time you told me (Lee) the story of the song One Night in Bangkok, and what the lyrics "I don't see you guys rating The kind of mate I'm contemplating I'd let you watch, I would invite you But the queens we use would not excite you" really meant. Perhaps you remember me stopping by when I went down to the break room around the bend.

After WPRO, I went on to do full-time work at WXLO and WORC-FM in Worcester, weekends at WFHN in New Bedford and lastly weekends on WWLI in 2007 & 2008. Not working for any stations at the moment, but I KNOW I will again someday... it's in my blood! :) Anyway, I just wanted to say hi to the both of you. I always admired Z100 and the talent on there (ESPECIALLY you guys!) and was VERY sad to see it go.

By the way, I was JUST thinking about you the other day, Lee. I have an aircheck I was playing of a station somewhere in the mid-west... 102.7 K??? and I THINK it was you. You went by a different name... maybe Jack Lee? LOVED hearing the aircheck you posted. I have several airchecks of Z100 that I recorded myself back then if you are interested. Very glad to hear from both of you... hope to keep in touch.

Hey Rich!

Glad you posted! I will have to think back to our meeting. Honestly, I don't remember talking with you.

And yes, I would love to hear any Z100 airchecks you might have. Can you believe I never recorded a Z100 legal ID, or the weather sounder, etc??
I DO have an old HAWK ID, and some other HAWK elements. So whatever you have, I would love to hear! Which dayparts??

Keep in touch. You can also find me (us) on Facebook.

Happy New Year!

Ken
