Ken Laird to 93.7 The Fan

always glad to see someone getting a job, even if it is part-time

Find a spot for Stan and Guy, have John Clayton drop in a couple of times a week, and it'll be just like 1250 moved to FM.

Hear, hear. However, as Stan now is turning up on 'DVE, that door might have closed.

Still, I still wonder what happens come January to ESPN's (or Fox Sports Radio's) national programs in the market. KDKA-FM loses its cachet if it picks up ESPN, WBGG might have a tie to Fox Sports because of Clear Channel's deals with Fox News Radio.

Frankly, I'm not sure either Fox Sports or ESPN would be that great of a loss for Pittsburgh listeners, except for carriage of ESPN's play-by-play (unless Disney allows that to turn up on new Radio Disney 1250).

I think the loss of espn radio in Pittsburgh would be a big loss. when it comes to day to day sports broadcasting ESPN Radio is pretty much the "gold standard" mostly do to the resoures availablel to them like "Mike and MIke" , Van Pelt, clayton, Hodge, "Jaws" and the rest of the stable of talent at Bristol. I truly hope an FMer in the Burgh picks up ESPN after Disney kicks it under the bus on newyears day.

It sounds like The Fan has doubled its Steelers pre-game. Instead of Boomer Esiason's Westwood national preview, followed by an inexecrable syndicated preview show from The Fan New York, this morning we have Joe Starkey going solo from 9 to 11 with "Pittsburgh GameDay Preview", to be followed by "Pittsburgh GameDay" (I think anchored by Filiponi and Josh Miller) from 11 to 1.

I guess the shift at 1250 left a lot of local advertisers wanting to be on a Steeler pre-game.

I do like the local shows on the fan a lot better then the national shows. The question is after football season, will they stay local on the weekends? On a side note, I thought Ken Laird did very good on his first weekend show on the fan last night from 8-midnight. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a weeknight show in the near future.

I goofed above... it's Paul Alexander with Josh this morning.

I thought he did well too. Maybe the universally unloved "Best of The Fan" could make way for a live host. Although, with only a few hundred listeners (and fewer callers), 2-6am has got to be a tough segment to program.

Tough to program and I would imagine even harder to sell. I though Chris Meuller (sp?) was doing okay in that slot, though I found his show to lean a little to heavy on people texting in. Just me, but reading texts on the air as opposed to actually taking calls is just boring radio for me. Having the ability to take texts is one thing, having a show that relies almost entirely on them is another. That being said, I am not sure how much of an audience can be convinced to call in during those hours, save for the Art Bell/George Norry crowd.

Perry Marshall, Bob Louge, and Larry King were pretty good at it.

Granted, a lot has changed since even Louge was on the air, the AM had a better signal for getting a larger audience than the FM does to attract more callers.

But if Tony Paige can do it, why can't a Pittsburgh host?

If you're going to do live overnights it can't be 4 hours of hoping someone calls. The host has to do some work and wite or produce some segments that don't rely on audience interaction. By 2AM any important game would be over for some time and you'd have plenty of time to craft a recation to it.

But then again the Fan is pretty much 24 hours of hoping someone calls.

Perry Marshall was old ladies complaining about their aches and pains. Bob Logue was five hours of senior citizens saying they should have lower property taxes. Two terrible shows.

Overnight call in shows sound like a prescription for suicide these days. The Fan is proving that even with a great signal there are so many alternatives out there that people aren't going to put up with bad radio to get their sports. It is going to be interesting in January to see how many of 1250s listeners just fall off of the radio dial.

I think they could get plenty of calls on an overnight show if they would play up the sports conspiracy angles, which are plentiful.

Lots of UFO's and apocalyptic conspiracy theories. That's how you generate
call volume between 2 and 6 AM.
