Kennedy Center Honors Ratings

The annual Kennedy Center Honors TV special on CBS-TV, hosted by the president, scored its lowest ratings ever:

The president had predicted his hosting would result in great ratings. He was wrong. There was a 35% drop from last year.

This year's honorees were Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester Stallone, George Strait, Michael Crawford, and the rock band KIss.

It was up against Sunday Night Football, where it got killed 17 to 4:

Still better than this year. I’m sure Trump didn’t help but Christmas Eve Eve wasn’t a great night.

Gee, bad press, poor ratings.

Who'da thunk it??

It is instructive to go back and look at the previous honorees during the first Trump administration (when he didn't seem to care about these things). In 2017 it was Carmen de Lavallade, Gloria Estefan, Norman Lear, LL Cool J, and Lionel Richie. I can't imagine him signing off on those choices, or other subsequent honorees during his first term like Wayne Shorter, Earth, Wind and Fire, Joan Baez, or Midori Goto.

Yeah, there's always some "big name" acts that will bring ratings, but there's always room for artists whom most people might not recognize, like opera singers or dancers or jazz instrumentalists. It's always had an element of celebrating the arts...one might even call it somewhat "elitist," but then again, they honored Led Zeppelin, so it's not above putting a rock band up in the balcony.

This year, "the arts" element was obviously missing. What's next for the organization? Giving The Mark Twain Prize for Humor to Larry the Cable Guy?
