KENS 5 Sports Icon Dan Cook Passes

It is for real this time. The very sad details are in the link. I had the pleasure of working with Dan his last year on TV. He was as nice and funny off camera, as he was on it. And, despite him not liking the "legend" tag, he was a TRUE San Antonio Legend. And, there will never be another like him. RIP. :'(

Sad! I absolutely loved KENS 5 News at 10 with Chris, Dan, and Albert. They would have me cracking up every weeknight!

I didn't realize that Dan had coined the phrase, "The opera ain't over until the fat lady sings" during the San Antonio/Washington playoff series in 1978. I grew up in Seattle and Dick Motta (Washington coach) used the phrase during the NBA Finals (Seattle vs Washington) that same year. I had always attributed the phrase to Motta!!!

Dan, RIP! My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family.

I watched Dan when he was on with Chris and Maclovio
at 10, but I didn't know he coined the phrase "the opera

Yogi Berra came up with that one. My condolences to
the Cook family, and if I were in San Antonio today I
still would make KENS my first choice for news.

I'm wondering if Dan Cook could get a job in TV today if he was just starting out. If the answer is no, then we should take a hard look at ourselves.

Dan was a "loose" cannon of sorts. I doubt that any news director would hire him these days. They want the young, cheap, bland (and perhaps blonde) newscasters who have no idea what they're talking about.
