KEOMISTAKE?!?

Oh, and one last thing... Peter, if you are still there... the whole "bonding" thing is mucho importante. And you don't need this information, but KLUV is a station that has bred on-air relationships with its listeners. Years ago, it had that. (Do yourself a favor and check out the past ruminations about KLUV's rich history). Now, not so much.

Rekindle that. The books are great, Mazel Tov. The loyalty is amazing. The playlists need some work. But the chemistry that used to be here is no longer. Take those ratings out for a spin and see what they can do. You may be pleasantly surprised.

But then again, what do we know, we are just a bunch of radio hacks that remember the days of lore. You know? Before voicetracking, PPM, CONsultants and uh, corporate radio. ;D

I'd like to see KLUV back off the compression. I caught a bit of Hungry Heart from Springsteen the other day, and I was instantly transported into mega-squash land.

But that's just my opinion. ;D

Acorn or yellow?

Personally, the 80s weren't nice to me, but I'd NEVER refer to them as "mega-squash land."

:D :p

My buddy Bob Elmore used to be an engineer at KLUV in the early-to-mid 2000s. He was always tweaking the compression to make the station sound better (as in LESS is MORE.) However...he was always overruled by the CE who thought he (the CE) knew best. And apparently it's a dead issue over there that the CE refuses to give in on. I've also heard the CE has hearing issues, so maybe it sounds just fine to him!

I mean overall mega-squash-land, not just that one song. ;)

Elmore??? Funny, never saw him at the transmitter site (where the processor is for KLUV)...CE Bill Taylor set it as the PD wanted it...and that was that. I had no issues with the sound but Elmore needs to remember, he aint the chief (if HE AINT THE CHIEF, he needs to keep his hands OFF the equipment...its not his decision; I heard he did the same thing to the CE at KVIL in early 2000/01......and then got him fired...probably trying to do the same thing to Bill)

My favorite KEOM mis-statement is when they say "That was 'Don't Bring Me Down' by Eee-Low" (you know, rhymes with "emo", right?)

I like listening about this time of year, just after the first six weeks. It seems like that's when the new crop of student DJ's get turned loose, learning from their mistakes -- it's like being back in the good ol' days of radio, before everything was polished to boring "perfection".

I especially enjoy listening to the news at :55. The music has to cut off just in time, then it's always a challenge to get the PSA started in place of the ad that comes with the news, and then switching back to the news... lots of buttons to mash. The kids do a pretty good job of getting *something* going, even if they just queue up the next song. Though sometimes they play Dead Air's Greatest Hits.

Gotta love that broadcasting school on SH-360. They really know how to create a stop set. :D

>>I especially enjoy listening to the news at :55. The music has to cut off just in time, then

I don't want to take undue credit here, but I sent the good Doctor a suggestion in 1993 that they lead up to those TSN news breaks with an instrumental, so they could fade out of it without incident. Before that, it would inevitably be a vocal, and sounded really bad when the song just dropped out in mid-sentence. (When I used to run the board for Z-Rock and KDNT a few hundred years ago, that's how the network did it...instrumentals to lead up to hard and soft breaks if the timing didn't work out right otherwise.)

And lo and behold, a short time later at KEOM, came the instrumentals to lead into TSN. Robert, can I safely take some credit for that?

No, because KEOM was already doing that in 1986. The method simply changed. ;) In those days, the cassette deck in the studio had instrumental fill songs. When the flip from reels to CD's occured in the spring of 89, two of the four reel decks were retained for special use purposes. Usually one deck had the fill music, and the other had emergency music. Of course both decks were heavily used during the holidays, as a lot of the music was not on index coded CD's from Century 21. After the upgrade to the UDS system, both consumer and Centruy 21 discs could be used in the jukeboxes. From then, on, usually only one reel deck was used, and that was for the fill music.

OK, the facts are close, but not exact...

It was Bill (the CE) who wanted to change the processing, if I remember the incident correctly. And it was Eric Disen (the DE) that squashed it. CW is correct. Processing is the CE's gig. I would never, ever have touched it without Bill's direction. And yeah, it was all at the transmitter.

CW, you probably were given some incorrect information about the KVIL situation. I can see how one might try to draw some inference from the timing. Eric Disen assigned me to KVIL to learn the Cowboys broadcast. Shortly after the CE gets canned. Was there any connection? Actually, I didn't even know there was any issue with the former CE. I liked him and we got along well. All I know of the situation is what Eric D. told Bill and me - that he was fired for just cause - VERY just cause.

Not being one to attack people, I'll just leave it at that. Just wanted to get the facts straight.

Good to see ya on here, Bob! Long time no see. Sorry if I drew the wrong inferences and conclusions on the KLUV sound...I knew you were aware of the overcompression issue there, but I took some hearsay from other people there in 2003 that you were constantly battling someone over it, and took it upon yourself to change it. I sincerely apologize, and thanks for setting the record straight. Call me sometime!

Oh boy... Now you've got us all wondering about the "just cause" subject

Details, details???? ;)

Hey Mike...

I hope you're listening this afternoon!

;D

Uh oh...I spent two hours at the doctor then two hours with the attorney this afternoon...and no time to listen in between. :-[ Sorry about that. What'd I miss?

I *WILL* take a stab at this, at least:

1. Dr. G announced his final Apple Corps award segment and said a tearful goodbye afterwards?

2. You announced your upcoming mud wrestling match with Andrea Galindo? (or would a Texas Death Match be better?)

3. You ran an "I'm Not Lisa-thon" for Jessie Colter fans EVERYWHERE!

4. You "accidentally" played an 80s tune?

5. Brenda Waggoner gave a fake recipe that included antifreeze and turpentine?

6. The station announced it would begin carrying a heavily-edited version of the RMS?

7. KEOM jock Precious Henderson announced she was leaving for the new Smooth Jazz station at 97.1?

8. Dr. G found out that I won a pizza from KEOM in 1994, and 6th Floor Museum tickets in 1998, and he thinks I should have to give it all back now? (AND my KEOM "chip clip"?)

9. You announced your resignation from KEOM over the air, and are headed over to take Peter Z's job as PD at KLUV?

10. You managed to line up "I'm Not Lisa" back-to-back with "Last Song," as a special favor to a special kinda guy like me? (I'd lay my bets on this one!!!) ;D

Awwwww damn Mike :(

Those were good guesses, but none of them are right.

Lets just say I revisited the "Babe With Styx" incident. ;D I'll upload the AC of it as soon as I can. ;)
