KERA to air AAA on 91.7

to be fair..i'll probably listen in the am drive...flip to 93.3 at least 2-7..I like Scott and after he's done @ 7 i'll flip to 91.7

Uh Oh 93.3...

You sure?

because this:

Alhadeff: it's a wonderful combination, mostly of singer-songwriters, folk, acoustic, jazz, reggae - a very broad-ranging kind of music service.

sounds nothing like the Bone, make that 93-3's, playlist (that I've heard). They play no folk, no jazz, no reggae, etc. And I've been suprised at some of the acoustic/singer-songwriter stuff I have NOT heard. No Lisa Loeb, no Duncan Shiek, minimal Natalie Merchant, etc. All stuff that was prevelant when they were the Zone.

XM's Loft is much "softer" than 93-3, my guess is they'll probably go in that direction. Or, to put it another way, no Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc that 93-3 is playing now.

Keep an eye on KVRK-89.7. Now that KVTT has been sold (and nothing has been said about it on air at KVTT this afternoon yet), then it is possible that the paid (err..."underwritten") teaching format might move down to 89.7 when KERA takes over.

[ rant begins here ]
This is the same KERA who sold KDTN to Daystar after fighting for decades to keep it out of the hands of U.N.T. or S.M.U. This is the same KERA who is in constant pledge mode (TV pledge programing begins the day after radio pledge programming ends and vice-versa). They are not programing the digitial TV space they have now (both on KERA and the multi-channel space from KDTN that remained theirs when KDTN was sold). KERA-FM is running TV audio (the Newshour: "on your screen is a list of the names of people who died in Iraq today....") reruns of Fresh Air at night rather than original programing. I am not confident that KERA can competantly program another station.

[/end rant ]

I think the idea is a good one. I like to keep my ears open for the new and different. Like Alan B. I shudder at thought of how it might be executed. KERA not only winds up with another "main channel:" but 2 additional HD subcarriers. What will they do with that? And will KERA/KERA-2 be exempt from the artist royalties legislation should Congress decided the record companies need more money (and-rant on-screw a few more artists-rant off)? It'll take a monster pledge drive to pay that bill annually! We should be thankful that 91.7 didn't go to EMF or one of the similar "national" set-it-and forget-it organizations. It's got to make the folks at Salem. Mortenson and KCBI happy now that there is one less full market signal preachin' and teachin'. And this could give 770 an excuse to bail from the big band format.

But, what's DFW going to do without an outlet for the "Point of View" talkshow? Marlin Maddoux must be turning over in his grave!

I Would Hope 770 Doesnt Kill its format. I Like its Saturday Night Soc Hop.
I Would Think they would go Oldies Before killing the Music.

I used to really enjoy the music on 90.1. I'm glad it's coming back. It was very different from anything else.

I welcome the move even if the AAA format may not be among my favorites. I've long thought that the non-comm region in D/FW had too many religious broadcasters. Maybe this is one tiny move away from being the Sahara of the Bozart?

hopefully it can look at what KGSR is doing down here in Austin and follow a similar path. KGSR is the only station I listen to on FM. I grew up in Dallas and my family still lives up there so I come "home" often. DFW radio is all yawns to me so I'm actually looking forward to this. If the new station is anything like KEXP in Seattle, I'll move back to Dallas... ok j/k.

Doesn't Salem have an interest in KVTT? Recall, Salem had proposed swapping KVTT and WRR, moving WRR to the non-commercial facility and KVTT to the commercial 101.1 spot several years ago...

It looks like KVTT's owners made a profit. The 2004 FCC filing to buy it shows the selling price at $16.5M. Apparently, KERA is buying it for $18M. Given the decline in prices in the industry, that's pretty good.

It won't be anything like KGSR per its press release. It is resurrecting the eclectic folk, world, AAA, reggae music it used to play in the evenings before it went all news and talk in 1996.

In this market, KZPS' last couple of months mixing classic rock, some AAA and Americana before reverting back to classic rock full-time was the closest D/FW had to KGSR. 99% of the people that visited this board hated it...

I would hate to see KVRK go Preachin' Teachin' .. doesn't salem already do preachin and teachin in the market???? KVRK's Christian rock is unique and one of the few stations in america programming such formats.. would be sad to see it sell out to yak and yak.

A few of us remember the very old days when KVTT was owned by Elkins Institute, and ran 780 watts. I recall the station put in a very weak signal into southwest Fort Worth in those days. Don't remember much about the music they played, not really a comfortable listen with the limited signal.

Anyone on these boards actually work at that incarnation of KVTT ?

I think KVRK will be fine they are indie and not owned by the same peeps as KVTT

Hi -

Can someone "clue me in?"

What is a "AAA" format? And why would KVTT switching to this format prompt 770 to drop their format?

As I no longer work there, I can attest to the fact - first hand - that 770 is indeed getting away from the big bands - they've been making the concerted effort doing just that in the last 6 months.

If Big Band music is now considered eclectic, I'm wondering if new management might be open to a show...

Thoughts, anyone?

Wow. Marlin Maddoux must be rolling over in his grave. For years he and his fellow KVTT hosts condemned NPR as the communist menace amongst us.
