KERN

Bakersfield has three News-Talkers KGET 970, KERN 1410 & KNZR 1560.
While Buckley owned KNZR has the Big Stick with 25,000 watts, It's AGM'S KERN that's tops in the market when it comes to local news and talk as it has been for years. Group owner AGM is based in Bakersfield making KERN a locally owned and operated station. Buckley Radio's KNZR prefers yesterdays news read out of the newspaper. At one time KNZR had someone who cared about local news gathering, A guy brought in from KKOB. Could you imagine WOR New York having someone reading from the newspaper in the morning then replaying it all day no matter how outdated the news became?. KGET being a Clear(CHEAP)Channel it sounds like they farm out most of their news to someone in Los Angeles, as do the traffic reports.
KERN proves you don't need a big stick to be the best!. KNZR could do better if they had a real news department as KNZR does have some great afternoon talkers in the newly added Jazz & Ralph. For now I just switch to KERN for the news.
KERN could go for a major power bump (49,000watts)if AGM wanted to by swapping the 50,000 watt KERI on 1180 with KERN. KERI does have a little null to the east to protect 1180 Williams AZ, it more than makes up for it in other areas like the Antelope Valley and the Central Coast where AGM owns other station.
As much a I like KERI the frequency would be put to better use with KERN on it.

Actually...while I agree the news/talk race is a 3-way race with the finish usually going KERN, KGET then KNZR(unfortunately usually in a dog race with KGEO for who is going to be last)... Clarification on your post. Clear Channel's KGET DOES have a local staff, does feature local programming and does cover local news. They do however pipe in their traffic after 9am from a CC service in LA. KGET has a very talented news guy in Jeff Lamuchi, and a good voice in Miranda. But they LACK is leadership. No one in that building knows how to truly run a news department. Chuck Allen's idea of covering news is to listen to KUZZ, then rewrite the stories. Most the rest of their news is just rewritten stuff from KGET Television. Do they even have a news director? How about a program director? Does the OM have ANY experience in news? Sadly (I had a friend who worked over there for a while), the answer is NO to all that. Advice CC: Dump Chuck, the only person in news that has guests write out their own questions. Lose the staff that looks like it's fresh out of Journalism 101 at BC that wouldn't know what question to ask. Hire a REAL PD/News Director and get Lamuchi MORE involved. You have RUSH for heaven's sake. You should be neck and neck with KERN. But remember..."It's The News Stupid". KGET might as well have Los Angeles staff reading Los Angeles stuff. You have NO news image.

KERN is the big dog becausethe work at it. The station in all local from 5a-11:45 am which keeps throughout the morning. Local news on the hour, one the half and when it breaks. LIVE. Thats the keyword here.

Jeff does sound very good at KGET, I miss hearing him on KERN, and I would assume they miss having him. You're right, he is the cornerstone of KGET.

KNZR, wish I could say. I haven't listened to that station in a while. They never gave me a reason to listen and so far, the havent changed. Old news, RB, and the Dodgers. That station could use a big facelift. They could be a real player if they wanted to be.

The one left out, KGEO, either looks up or down at KNZR every book, but not by much. No real news. but a decent attempt at a guys station.

Re: KERN & KGEO KUZZ News

I did leave out KGEO and KUZZ, KGEO because its more a side kick to KERN both well programmed AGM stations. Both stations have good signals for 1000 watt stations, I myself have herd both of them in Thousands Oaks during the day.
KUZZ is a top notch station from the newsroom to the transmitter, KUZZ is a full service station that plays country. Regarding the news leader just look whos mike flags show up at most news events KERN and KUZZ.
I am tuff on KNZR because I know Buckley would and could do better if they thought more of Bakersfield people, as a long time listener of Buckley radio's KGIL in Los Angeles until the 94 earthquake wiped out the studios of KGIL and scared management out of the San Fernando Valley. At one time KGIL had a first rate news department on par with KMPC in its day, at least it sounded like it on the air where it mattered. Buckley management thinks very little of Bakersfield people and it shows everytime they run an outdated newscast read out of the newspaper by Kathy King late into the afternoon. I would have more respect for Buckley if they just let KUZZ provide their local news as KUZZ does not conflict with any Buckley stations and would do a far better job, not to mention it would save me from having to turn to KERN for Live and Local afternoon news.
For the record A Buckley family member and former KNZR talk show host now reads the news for KERN.

KERI? Who and What?

Hi folks,

I live in Seattle now, but am a Bakersfield native. I got my start at KWSO in Wasco, which became KERI. Who owns it now? What are they programming.

When I worked there, it was all taped God shows. Wazzup with it now?

Thanks!

Re: KERI? Who and What?

50,000 watt KERI 1180 is owned by AGM according to their wed site.
AGM also owns AM stations KERN and KGEO and has just sold KBID 1350 for a tad under a million.
KERI still runs a Christian format

Further for the record, it's Danielle Sullivan, who is Brad Buckley's wife.
