KETK-56 Tyler Weather

Anyone hearing anything about the status of John Adams and the station's supposedly advertising for a new chief meteorologist? He's doing his regular weather segments and there don't seem to be any market rumblings about any sort of change in the making.

Is it possible that the company is going to move him into another position off the air--something at management-level? Could be anything, then perhaps nothing and things will roll along as they have been. The post a couple of weeks ago regarding the vacancy notice was intriguing, or did that turn out to be some inaccurate information that got out. It happens, especially in the rumor-every-hour broadcast business.

Dunno. Wonder why JA is (supposedly) leaving? Whatever the reason, it can't be that bad if he's staying on 'til a replacement is found. I still don't know what happened that he left the first time when Norm Van Ness took his place.

Just a thought...Neal Barton has his credentials, IIRC.
______________

Same questions I've been mulling over. If he's moving to another position within the company, there most likely is no animosity and thus management is comfortable with Adams remaining on the air until whatever change is to be made, is made.

Even listening closely, there still are no vibes on the grapevine as to what's in the making here. An intriguing dynamic at work.

And Neal Barton, IIRC also, is a certified meteorologist. He did nice WX work at KTVT CBS 11, but was squeezed out for reasons seemingly unknown to most. What it seemed to boil down to was too many WX people and not enough WX slots. As for who stayed and who left--politics, favorites? Barton has made a good addition to KETK's on-air lineup.

Anyone know if Neal Barton and Brad Barton are related?

Not of relation.....One of the reasons Neal got the boot,my belief, that is the whole "Belo Exodus" occured during his tenure. He got the boot and we got Kristine "Deer In Headlights" Colonic..er..Kahanik from WFAA.

..and your right, Neal is a better weatherman than deserves in the Tyler market.

I've watched John Adams as far back as his days at KLTV. Would hate to see him go, but if NB were to take his place, I can only imagine that his WX would be as good if not better than his anchor desk-ing. Merry CHRISTmas, y'all!
______________

Good point. John Adams is the epitome of low key--the opposite of Scirto--but he nonetheless (as with Scirto) is a capable and friendly-appearing meteorologist. Adams has a solid following, so the company either feels there is a genuine need for a change, or has a major league higher calling for him within the organization--although it may involve sending him elsewhere to make the change. It's an intriguing situation, although, again, there may be nothing at all which will change. If only each of us had a dollar for every broadcasting change we heard was going to happen but never did.

I'm feeling greedy today...can we make it $100?

You don't think JA would be relegated to what's left of NBC53 in Lufkin/Nac, do you????
______________

You're right--a hundred it is. After all, let's get into the major scheckles with ownership and management.

Regarding JA, who knows what plans lurk in the minds of the suits. (The Shadow does, but he isn't talking.) Somehow I don't see John being kicked down the stairs but maybe up stairs. He has a long history with the station through his two stays there, so the owners/management possibly could feel somehow indebted to him for his service, although this attitude would be a rarity indeed, given the philosophy that holds over broadcast operations today.

If John really is being moved out, maybe the suits in a gin-induced fit of humane conduct, decided to find something else within the company for him to do, above sentencing him to Nacogdoches/Lufkin. Through it all, though, I keep hoping our conjecturing is for naught and the weather with John Adams will continue as it is. He's a nice guy, a competent meteorologist, and may be more of an asset to the company than the front office realizes at the moment.>

You waxed eloquent on that, my friend.

I have to think that his continued on-air presence in light of the job posting means something good for him. There's more than enough there (Robert and their new weekend person) that could fill in while they're looking if there were some bad blood there. (unless I'm missing something there)

BTW...anybody know what happened to Kennie Berg? She just up and disappeared.
______________

"Word is" she went to Louisiana. Reason(s) unknown, apparently the station's people aren't commenting.

About John Adams, agree on your assessment that the indicators are there's no bad blood or strife behind the plan. Stations planning to can someone don't allow him/her to stay on the air. The walking papers are processed and the departed is shown the door.

It would be a shame to lose John Adams....I've been watching him ever since his days on KLTV, and even when he switched to KETK with Chuck McDonald (whatever happened to him?) in 93.

As for Neal Barton, he's a pretty good anchor for 56, but for him to add weatherman onto his anchor duties and his duties as KETK's ND, would be too much.

Speaking of 56, I can't help but take the moment and rant about their review of the top ET news stories of 2005 that aired last week, and how, in my opinion, it looked more like a self-promotion for 56 News instead of looking at the top stories. End of Rant.

So you noticed that, too. KETK and CBS 19 both seem to be putting themselves and name ID ahead of the substance of the news itself. Channel 7 has its faults but it still holds and will likely maintain a commanding lead over 56 and 19. KLTV sits comfortably while the other two are jumping up and down as if to say, "We DO exist, you know."

CBS 19 last night did a two minute or so promo, during the news and treated as a story, which was no more than people, in obviously staged situations, thanking the station for its work in some sort of problem solving campaign it goes on in behalf ov viewers who are experiencing some difficulty or another. Many stations have such viewer helplines, but few use time in a newscast for such blatant tooting of their own horns.

And agree whole heartedly, Neal Barton is a true asset to KETK. Hope they enjoy his services, because unless they've created for him an outstanding pay/benefits package, he won't be there much longer. Dallas to Tyler is a fairly big step down and Neal logically will be looking to spring back to a larger market. Right now he's pretty much carrying the show for the station.

56 News has just decreased in quality a little bit over the last few months.....I watched one of their "East Texas Live" programs, and I'm thinking to myself....this has got to be one of the most cheesiest programs on KETK.

And speaking of their "2005 Review", KETK just ran it....AGAIN!....so I'm now officially turned off of 56 News for a while, and am switching back to KLTV....KLTV just seems to be the most dignified newscast in this market.
