As a graduate of that program a long time ago all I can say is.........they are part of the Texas A&M system now. Need I say more.

Cheap shot aside I find that kinda shocking. That is also the first I've heard of it.

Having seen and heard from more than a few former KETR employees. If you are not immediately liked ,keep your bags packed. They are very very "clickish" on the staff. The undermining of colleagues is worse than corporate radio. Vicki is not well liked but has tenure, seniority, etc. If you see an ad anytime for an opening there, steer clear! They only hire ET A&M grads anyway. Consider yourself blessed if you don't get the call. I had a good friend ,move 100 miles to take a job with them not too long ago. They took away his job he was hired for in 4 weeks! and gave him a lesser one, plus his benefits he had were taken away and would not kick back in for 6 months. He told them adios. The guy was not a slacker and won numerous broadcast awards It underlines the atmosphere there.

Ain't that kind of snooty?

"And don't forget our wine and cheese party in November too ... "

So what would you have them do? A free event would raise no money for this non-comm station. This events sounds nice and will probably raise quite a bit of money.

I've been to enough station anniversaries and reunions and such---any celebration is usually meant to be a "thank you" to the listeners for supporting the station for all those years. Having them pay to receive a "Thank you" is just not right. KETR can throw fundraising parties anytime they like, and what a bad time anyway, with people so tapped out from gas prices and donating to Katrina (I know a hurricane wasn't in KETR's plans, but still.) Even KNTU's anniversary in 1999 wasn't a fundraiser. They WANTED their exes and listeners there. They're content with making steady streams of mailing to get donations, but didn't exploit their anniversary to do that.

That's Holloway's game--cater to those who stroke her ego and high hat those among the great unwashed who don't play it her way. Remember the Texas AP convention seven years ago in Dallas when she was shining on all the wire service people as if it were "her" convention and hogging the spotlight at a couple of the panel discussions. She so turned off one broadcast owner that he said, "Enough of this s**t," and left.

Perhaps she should swim around in Gee Lake with the ducks and get some humility back. Or did she fire the ducks, too?

Elitist, snobbish ... get the pic?

It also sounds elitist ... snobbish. Hell, have fundraisers on the air with some overpriced gifts.

Just idiotic.

And from the comments below, this GM is no PR genius.

He is an immense talent, and one helluva nice guy who was always helpful. KETR is a nice studio, but"NICE" stops there. I hope they don't sell many tickets, with hopes that humility comes their way. I know it would be akin to the winter olympics being held in Saudi Arabia.

Given what goes on at KETR, Gee Lake over part of which KETR sits, ought to be changed to GEEZE!! Lake.

Only the rich can attend concerts.

> Basic tickets are $45 per person. <

Considering what concert tickets go for these days, $45 sounds very reasonble. I don't consider $45 to be the realm of just wealthy people.

I just checked a few ticket prices:

LeAnn Rimes
Where: Grand Casino Mille Lacs, Onamia, MN
When: Friday, September 30, 2005 @ 9:00 PM
$185.00 each

Jeff Foxworthy
Where: Reno Events Center, Reno, NV
When: Saturday, October 22, 2005 @ 8:00 PM
$175 - $270

Hmm. maybe just rich people are the only ones going to concerts

Plus football games, but it still doesn't excuse KETR's method.

KETR also advertises some restaurants in the area which is fine once an hour, but they do it several times an hour, plus mention prices on items, same goes for other"underwritten" spots. A big no no.

There just seems to be a continuing arrogance that prevails among the station's higher-ups, one person in particular. What she does in terms of operations and policy may fly with the university administration, but keeping the FCC happy is another story altogether.

KETR of course began as a campus radio station serving the university and the community. But now it has gone "high brow" and is in all ways "elitist," as pointed out in other posters' comments. It has been reduced to the playground and comfort zone of a few who use the campus bailiwick in which to hide. In fairness, this observation relates to campuses everywhere. Many people find the insular nature of academe a good buffer against the rigors of the real world. It's very easy tp do the radio routine when all that's needed is underewriting support and the university budget.

Exactly nuzguy! It used to be that a Univeristy's station manager, Program Director, News Director,Sports Director and Public Affairs director were ran by a graduate student (GM) and the other positions by undergraduates. This gave the students more incentives to learn and excell. As you pointed out it has become more "high Brow". The learning relies more heavily on the textbook, than actual on air experience. KETR was a good station in the late 70's to the late 80's then the change started to infest itself. Small wonder why new talent has become "less talented".

A quick addendum. College and university stations at many locations are in fact run by paid staff and students allowed to do no more than step-and-fetch-it duties. Campus stations first served as part of broadcast education sequences and students majored in broadcasting, working at the campus facility as a laboratory experience. But that began to change, as Ed pointed out, and administrators began to view and use the stations as a PR arm of their schools, and of course PR couldn't be left to students. So campus radio slowly became a haven for those who wanted "a station" but not in the real world where such dastardly challenges as sales and ratings spoiled all the good times.

Campus stations have become just another line in universities' budgets, right in there with test tubes for the chemistry lab and new dead frogs for the biology dissection classes. So, KETR is far from being alone in its elitist safe harbor for those who want a secure niche in which to remain. KETR is, however, an egregious display of who is king (or queen) and who are the servants. Servants come and go, with some degree of regularity, but those at the top stay comfortably entrenched to guard the throne--making them, one supposes, residents of the throne room.

There was a mention of Holloway "having tenure." Tenure is a much misused term in the academic setting. It is reserved for longer-term faculty who hold terminal degrees (in most but not all cases and usually, but again not always, doctorates.) This isn't true in Holloway's case. She MAY hold a master's degree, and she most likely isn't a regular faculty member, or even a part-timer. In university employeedom she is "staff." So given these conditions, it's highly unlikely that she is tenured, no more so than other "staff" (non- faculty) employees of the university. The statement about her being "tenured" was well intentioned and she and others may possibly imply that she has tenure, but not in an academic sense. A staff member "in tight" with the administration may hold unofficial at-will tenure, but that is in itself pretty tenuous.

This thread sure has brought out a lot of info about KETR I've never heard before.

KETR has the right to do whatever sort of "thank you" they want. Fundraiser or no. It's apparent that even if it were a free event, there would be plenty of complaints from people who don't like what's going on there.

True they do, but be responsive not elitist.

You're right.

And people who know the facts have a right NOT to attend if they want. Boycotting such an event is the best way to effect change.

Unless of course, management is as dense as some have indicated.
