Kevin Calabro On KIRO

A blog post at the Seattle Weekly indicates he has a show in name only. Is this similar to the John Curley show on KIRO FM that he rarely hosted?

http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2013/01/kevin_calabro_quits_710_kiro_espn_radio.php

Calabro has had a pretty full schedule this winter calling basketball with the Pac-12 Network. I watch a lot of college basketball (in fact I have Gonzaga BYU on in the background right now) and he's pretty much their lead (or co-lead with California-based Ted Robinson) announcer for basketball. That being said, he calls all the Husky Home games that are on the Pac-12 Network and when he does have to travel generally stays within the Pacific Northwest. I can't believe he can't pop in on his radio show once or twice a week.

Besides his Pac-12 Network work, Calabro was elevated to the lead announcer for the NBA on ESPN Radio with the death of Jim Durham. With the NBA season in the second half, he will be working PBP regularly, and not always on weekends (in Chicago for MLK Day, in Los Angeles two Thursdays ago).

I thought it was general knowledge that he gave up the radio show to Jim Moore a while back. The news item here is that 710 still has him on their website and promos.

I don't listen to sports talk so I was unaware he had pretty much given up his show to Jim Moore. Hard to keep track of these things when the website still advertises the Kevin Calabro show.

Thanks for the other note about Calabro taking over the lead NBA on ESPN Radio play by play roll. I was unaware of that.

That would be the EEO listing for The Gassman's new gig.

In related news Dave Softy Mahler was promoted to pm drive at KJR replacing Gas in the slot. Elise moves to middays.

Calabro was on the ESPN PBP of the OKC-Miami game tonight. As usual, sounded great.

He is, beyond a doubt one of the best radio PBP guys in the NBA. If the Sonics are indeed reincarnated, if he doesn't get the job, then there would be a great revolt. I hope Hansen realizes this.

Calabro is one of the best basketball announcers in the country, for both TV and radio, period.

It'd be interesting, if the Sonics come back, would he return to that role full time, or would he do like some other local/national talent (see Marv Albert for many years...) do and work a mixed schedule of both local team and national games (for a big network, whether ESPN radio or continued work at Pac-12 Networks).

While I had noticed that Calabro was absent when I (infrequently) listen to KIRO AM in the afternoon, I just figured it was his basketball committments. Its also very possible he did this to simplify things should the Sonics return to town. Not only would he likely not have the interest or time to host a radio show, this way his relationship with KIRO would not present issues should another station end up with Sonics radio rights.

I like Jim Moore, but I don't see how he's the best guy to lead an afternoon drive show. Maybe Gas really is heading for this timeslot on KIRO whenever his non-compete expires.
