Kevin Clay

I do remember when Kevin Clay worked for the old Zou 98 and the old Q-100, so could it be a possibility that a Top 40 or a AC station in the Little Rock market could snatch KC up?

I believe you're mistaken. Kevin came to LR, originally, to work at The Maverick, long after the "old Zou 98" days. He's a very talented guy who can do a few formats and someone should hire him quick.

UJ, he may have came to LR to work at the old "Maverick", but he was the Q-100 morning host for a time in the late 90's. The reason I know this is because he used to play selected parts of songs he used to spoof, such a song he did that made fun of Texas that kinda rhymed with MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This". He was not at Q-100 long(what morning host was there long).

I remember Kevin. Him and I go way back.....as far as 1985 when he was programming 96X when it was in Kilgore, TX (and at the Longview Mall in which I was never visible there...only in Kilgore). He is a real nice guy in his own way and never made an enemy of anyone. I once talked to Kevin about 10 years ago or so and at the time, he was in Fayetteville, if I'm not mistaken. But sorry to hear that he is not at the Point anymore. Bummer!

Kevin does a great job on any format he is given. I remember a couple of years ago when Ray Lincoln was out sick for a week or so, he filled in on KARN. Did a heck of a job, and I really enjoyed him as a talk show host. If they were still doing 9-11 AM live on the station, he would have been excellent for that.

You can catch a video blog of him at ...

I'm still not sure what happened. Did he not want to do a live ad for the product mentioned in the blog and management can him?

If so ... I'm, almost glad I'm not in the bizz anymore.

Kevin is a class guy, and never says a negative word about anyone!! Word from inside is, Phillip J had fallen out of Love with Kevin, going back to mid last year. Biz has been going down on The Point for a long time, expenses needed to be cut, the entire sales staff has turned over, Kevin was the next casualty. Maybe the problems over there go higher than the morning guy and sales reps.

It happens in any business, not just radio. Someone (GM, GSM, SM) has to prove to the investers or upper management they are "taking action." Truth is, sales are tight all over and expenses are up. There's no accounting for poor management. Wanna bet the person that empties the trash in the GMs office still has a job?

I would submit that is the case. Speaking as a technically inclined listener and refugee from radio (albeit in another part of the country), the station is just not very enjoyable to listen to. To begin with, IMO it is very fatiguing on the ears (too much compression), the music is VERY stale (classic rock is tough-lots of titles to choose from but the familiarity factor forces far fewer titles to be played) and some of the jocks just sound like they are going through the motions. They need to freshen things up like change the liners, get new contests and just sound like they care to be there. They've got no competition now, so if they don't automatically pick up at least the 2+ share Magic had 12+, someone needs to ask questions about why they haven't.

Just my $.02

People that have been around radio in Central Arkansas for any length of time quickly realize that Phillip Jonsson's radio stations are his "toy trains" and, from time to time, he blows them up whether that's the logical thing to do or not.

Philip Jonsson has turned his toy train KABZ-FM into a top 5 station......far from blowing it up. It took guts and money (which he has both of in spades)

I was on the station from 1997 through 2000 when it was KSYG and in those days The Point was killing and we were on our ass. He gave us a lot of freedom, unfortunately, he also gave his old GM and sales manager a lot of freedom as well. Once they were gone, the station took some direction, added Tommy, supported Rainwater more and today they are killing.

I got fired by radio genius? Gary Bruce in favor of Pat Lynch....that didn't work either, but had I not been hired by KLIF in Dallas, I would have been very happy to stay in Little Rock and work for Philip for the rest of my career. He was always very fair to me.

Wth all due respect, you have your view annd I have mine. And neither of us is likely to change the other's mind. No, I never worked for Jonsson, but I have a few friends who were terminated for no good reason by him. That's not unusual in this day and time, but let's be sure to call a spade a spade.
