Captain Happy

Guest
From the lips of a salesman named Bill Mason over WCOJ, who called me to see if I could bring my boss to meet with WCOJ's new GM.
Yes, it's true, it seems that Kevin Jaiber, is one among many incompetant Managers at WCOJ who just couldn't get the job done.
It's his fault really for being so retarted to think that he could get any more than 5 or 6 people to listen to WCOJ if he put Dr. Joy Browne on the air. Of course Ira Rosenblatt, is just as foolish...and greedy too. He was the a-hole who came in from Rhode Island and bought Route 81 radio from Lloyd Roach. Why Ira Would buy a string of mediocre 5,000 watt forgettable cobweb filled stations is beyond anyone with common sense. Quite frankly, nobody cares about The swapshop as much as WCOJ likes to think, in fact I have lured away quite a few clients of WCOj who openly say that Advertising on WCOJ doesn't work, and go on to say that it never will, no matter how much they pound away.
It's just a shame that JOe Thomas will probably finish out his career at this dilapadated geriatric station. When Kevin Jaiber showed up and began to change the syndication programs, he also really took a shine to JOe thomas's show. He must have liked him sooooo much that he decided to put Joe on during the weekends too. I recently heard JT, do a snorefest of a show on sunday. Joe had some Yenta call in and ramble endlessly about they joys of Kennett Square. I'm sure if anyone were listening they either narrowly avoided crashing their cars into a tree because they fell asleep, or those 5 or 6 dedicated listeners of WCOJ changed the station.
Anyway, I'm sure Ira wanted Kevin to bring in some unobtainable amount of money from WCOJ's worthless advertising, and because the station has no real listeners who care, there was hardly any revenue, and no people who would make the same mistake twice. SO with his revenue goals going into the crapper along with his worthless career, Kevin Jaiber was fired By Ira Rosenblatt earlier this week. I know this because of a loose lipped and almost washed up WCOJ sales guy named Bill Mason. :D

I wonder when WCOJ will realize that it's time in the sun has long since ended, and the only AM stations that anyone actually pays attention to are, The Big Talker, WIP, and KYW, and NOT WCOJ.

Captain,

We all know you were a salesperson for WCOJ and that, for whatever reason, you no longer are.

Because of that, please allow me to say that your post seems a tad bitter.

WCOJ is a tiny station that doesn't mean a thing to anyone except the few lost souls who work there and listen. Soon it will be sold to a religious or ethnic group. As admirable as the current efforts at WCHE are, they will soon, undoubtedly, also fall prey to some fringe group with enough cash to sway the owner into a sale or at least an LMA.

Do yourself a favor and move on. Your kind of anger has been known to cause cancer. But that's okay, because I just bought a universal cancer cure from one of WCOJ's infomercials. Let me know if you have any problems and I'll send you a dose. Or, I can drive it over to your house in the 1977 Chevy Impala I bought on the Swap Shop along with a swell screen door.

The day of stations such as WCOJ, WCHE, and thousands of others throughout the country died when the bird started to carry tv signals to every corner of the globe.

When small market licenses were given out during the 1960's, people took pride in the fact their town/city had its own radio station. The stations were often community minded, with a good local news staff, local live-talk and support from the local business community.

Today, people get their news from CNN. Sports from ESPN. The weather from the Weather Channel. The only local news that matters is the latest murder, drug bust, or gory accident. Its the news from Philadelphia or Harrisburg that matters, and few pay attention to even that. No one cares anymore about what is going on in the WCOJ community or West Chester (which is why local government can get away with so much corruption - there is no one to investigate their mis-deeds).

Local business support? Its just not there any more. Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreen, the huge auto malls have replaced the local shops that would support the local stations in the 60's and early 70's. That was a rude awakening for me when I returned to radio sales in the early 90's, having left it in the mid 70's. The local shops just weren't there anymore, and if they were, their profit margin was so thin there was no ad money available. And the big chains and national buyers were not wasting money on AMs with a few hundred listeners. And from a market perspective, their thinking is correct.

The day of the WCOJs, WCHEs and even the WURDs and WHATs of this world has been over since cable tv arrived (which itself took the bulk of ad revenue previously earmarked for the local AM). Anyone buying small-medium market AM stations is doing so for ego or a hobby. It is a total waste of money when you can earn more with bank cd's.

**"Captain Happy" sells ad space on www.virtualchestercounty.com and I'd like you to go there and take note of the two WCOJ links right on their home page. That must drive the good Captain even more happy. Now, I wonder if they'd like it very much if I brouht one of their former employees on to my show and let them speak of them in this way? Even better than that, what if I were to read this posting on-the-air but changed "WCOJ" to "Virtual Chester County"? I also wonder if they even know that their little Kenny is this fellow? Perhaps I should just call them and ask.

It's just a shame that JOe Thomas will probably finish out his career at this dilapadated geriatric station.

**I've worked at lots of stations, Ken. Unlike you. And I like it at WCOJ.

When Kevin Jaiber showed up and began to change the syndication programs, he also really took a shine to JOe thomas's show. **That's called a community service show, Kenny. Something that you don't seem to understand. It's what radio stations are supposed to do to help their community.

I'm sure if anyone were listening they either narrowly avoided crashing their cars into a tree because they fell asleep, or those 5 or 6 dedicated listeners of WCOJ changed the station.

**Why don't your turn YOUR knob? For such a disguntled employee, you spend an awfully large amount of time listening.

Anyway, I'm sure Ira wanted Kevin to bring in some unobtainable amount of money from WCOJ's worthless advertising, and because the station has no real listeners who care, there was hardly any revenue, and no people who would make the same mistake twice.

**Ask your bosses since they advertise with us.

**Bill Mason is a good person who accomplishes more marketing in an hour that Ken Miller did in the entire time I knew him.

I wonder when WCOJ will realize that it's time in the sun has long since ended, and the only AM stations that anyone actually pays attention to are, The Big Talker, WIP, and KYW, and NOT WCOJ.

**Except for you, who may only be listening out of bitterness, but you ARE still a loyal listener, apparently.

**Joe Thomas, WCOJ

It's so funny to do a postor search, then compare writings on this very forum from the same author both kissing WCOJ's butt (to an unwarranted extreme) then ripping WCOJ's head (to the other unwarranted extreme).

The musings of Captain Happy (I mean Ken) are funny. And I don't mean funny, haha.
First of all, Ken, get the spelling of the man's name right. It's Jaibur, not Jaibber.
Secondly, with all the stations in the Philadelphia region to post about, Ken seems almost obsessed with COJ. Is it because you couldn't produce there without stealing other people's leads, Ken? Oh, what's that? You can produce? What radio station is that that you're working for again? Oh, not working for one huh?
Maybe if you worked on that porn addiction you might be able to get some work done. And maybe then all that pent-up anger would ease up.
Here's an idea Ken. Work on the anger problem, get some pants that fit, and then maybe you'll be able to move past COJ.
BTW, I'm sure Bill's REAL thrilled he talked to you about this.

From Radio-Info, October, 2005:

I work for an AM radio station that owns it's market. I understand the need that my station serves, and I under how my AM radio station superserves it's market. ENough about me, I'm not KYW. I can't stand listening to the endless crap on KYW, none of the info effects me. I know that teletype sound is only there for effect. I know KYW charges rates that would make Billy Graham stand up and yell "Jesus Christ!"
I also know that there are some advertisers who do not benefit themselves by advertising on KYW, they do it so they can stroke their egos. I also know that Fred Sherman should be put out to pasture, his on air delivery Sucks, and is antiquated. He sings the KYW tagline for goodness sake, and I don't care if it's his trademark.

My question is what is the magic about KYW? I know they offer necessary info, news traffic and weather. But when the average TSL is roughly 20 minutes...as they themselves advertise ( give us 20 minutes, we'll give you the world)How do they consistantly pull in the #1 rating or at least remain among the top 3.
Do they have any chinks in their armor? ( being an AM station is not one of them)

While the above was credited to another nickname, subsequent posts proved it to be Captain Happy. I guess Freud and Jung were right when they theorized that love and hate are similar emotions separated by a fine line.

Ira Rosenblatt

Not to get off the topic of Captain Happy, but I noticed something of interest earlier in the post. I didn't know Ira Rosenblatt was back in the radio game. He was the former owner of the 96.1 frequency in the Lehigh Valley (then WLEV, now Cat Country WCTO). I believe the company name was Telemedia. Ira seemed to know how to make a buck in radio. It will be interesting to see what he does with this bunch!
