Kevin Redding out at WROR

The story is on All Access. Contract not renewed but he's staying on for now. I think it's too bad as he does a good job, especially considering he had to make a transition from WAAF to playing Abba & The Monkees. Very professional comments about Greater Media from Kevin too, which is the way to do it. Now I wonder if Paul Perry will move into that shift.

Something tells me Paul would want more than beer money so that scenario is doubtful. Kevin was a bargain but you also get what you pay for in life and business. The ad for his replacement made me chuckle as it said they were looking for someone who can do an entertaining show and not just a shift. Given they will do three breaks an hour mostly liners and can not do any sort of show thatWest thinks might possibly eclipse L and W who are the only ones allowed to have personality on the station, I found that description kinda funny.

Wouldn't the long term move be to put together a team in the afternoon that you could move into L&W's slot in a few years when they retire? Is there any long term thinking in radio any more or do you just bring a hack team from some other market in and lose a few steps?

Kevin's a great guy and knows more about programming than some people in PD gigs. He did what he needed to do to get that big market experience, and walks away with his head held high. I know he'll end up in a good gig somewhere and some of us will have to work for him.

Evil genius cannot be contained!

He may be a great guy but point being a part timer at waaf having no name in market and getting afternoons at WROR, he didnt have any leverage so Im suure he was paid nothing for the job. Paul Perry would want to be paid well and would not want to spit liners as that station's afternoon shows are limited by management to doing. Wasn't he a bit young for a classic hits position like that? they may have been asking too much of someone who was not around when most of these songs were. It is too bad it's not Kevin's faul, why should he pay for a not so smart hire?. You can't expect someone much younger than the baby boom demo to relate to that demo well can you?.

I don't think they gave Kevin enough time. I don't think he's been there for much more than a year & while WROR doesn't allow much room for personality I think he always made the most of any open mike time he had & was good with callers. I thought he sounded believable but when you look at comparable formats you have Karen Blake on Oldies 103 & Chuck Nowlin on WZLX & both are recognizable names. They needed to give Kevin more leeway on the air. There was no reason not to renew this guy's contract unless they already have someone with name recognition slotted for the shift.

As far as Paul Perry, I read here that he's weekending there but haven't heard him. Unless he voicetracks it from afar I doubt he's back in Boston because he misses the drivers. If he has no other irons in the fire, it could be either settle for WROR or keep looking. I'd love to hear him back in Providence again, but down here they're doing all but outsourcing on air jobs to India.

You are probably right he did not get much of a shot but it was probably not a shot he should have been given in the first place. Again not something you can blame Kevin for as much as management for a poor hire. He's still too young for that format the way it is delivered on that station and he probably had too much of a transition to make coming from WAAF. Then again only giving him a one year contract should have been a good sized clue to Kevin himself too. I feel bad for him as the allaccess quote from Ken West says " Kevin has done everything we've asked him to do" yet he's still being let go?. If he did everything asked of him and did not get results then that's a programming failure and not Kevin's, but the jock always takes the hit for a management blunder.

Still, he was given the shot and failed to do anything special with it. Didn't Thai fail horribly at that time slot on ROR too?

Outside of Loren and Wally....in my opinion ROR has no buzz at all. Kevin is probably a nice person but as a jock seemed very boring. Does Greater Media care about what talent they have on after Morning Drive on any of their music stations? It says something for Pete Falconi and his air staff that Oldies is consistently tops in the ratings. I don't know how Paul Perry would be in the afternoon at ROR...he's probably used to talking a lot being on in the morning...and I doubt he'd have that freedom in afternoons.

Nobody has been able to make a go of afternoon drive on WROR. Talk about a revolving door.

Personally I liked Julie Deveraux in PM drive, but Greater Media's suits don't agree with me.

It appears to be somewhat of a prevalent formula for many commercial music stations (of all formats) nationwide to put their female DJ's in mid-day.

We do have a few exceptions here in Boston, but I noticed that if you look at a lot of music station website DJ schedules across the country, you'll usually see a morning drive "team" with male main hosts and a female newsreader and/or "sidekick", often followed by a female mid-day jock, then a solo afternoon "personality" who is often male.

Paul Perry listed on WROR

For those of you scoring at home....congratulations. ;D

But, SERIOUSLY, I just checked WROR's website and Paul Perry's name IS listed on the Personalities page. However, as of yet, there is no bio for him. I personally havent heard him on the station yet although I havent been listening to WROR much on the weekends lately.

In response to Eli, I agree most of the female DJ's are on in the mid-day or as morning sidekicks. As far as afternoon Drive in Boston the only female I can think of that is on that shift is Karen Blake on Oldies (and I understand she is doing quite well) I am just curious though right now are there any other females on in the afternoon in Boston...I can't think of any others.

Bait set...who bites?

Neanderpaul with your reply it jolted by memory...I am not a regular listener of WAAF so I forgot about Miss. Carrie until I saw your post...ok that's 2 are there any others?

Paul Perry on WROR right now

Ok, well, Paul Perry is on WROR right now (Sunday). I believe he came in at 1pm because I still heard Victor K after noontime.

Heard Paul for the first time around 1:15 as he introduced some music. I walked into the room as he was doing that so Im not sure if he mentioned his name or not but I recognized his voice. Didnt hear him again until about 1:45 when he read about 10 seconds of a commmercial.

Then, moments ago (1:55ish) , heard him with a contest winner and also about 5 seconds of technical problems when a commercial wouldnt play.

Paul Perry is back. Look for him to take over afternoon drive as has already been mentioned several times.

Just heard him (Paul Perry). He sounded ok. If he does end up doing afternoons on ROR do you think it'll really make that big of a difference in the afternoon ratings?
