Kevin Wall on KXNT/Politics on KBAD

Of everyone who has auditioned for KXNT afternoons, this weeks host Kevin Wall has been my favorite so far. He sounds like a real pro, interacts well with the callers and chooses interesting topics to discuss.

Scanning the dial I was surprised to hear a heated political discussion this afternoon on FOX SPORTS 920. Normally I don't like it when sports stations go off-topic. But this was compelling radio. Ballpark Frank and several others in the studio were talking about Obama. the economy, taxes, etc. Everyone had a different take but they were all passionate and opinionated. It was ironic that a sports station had more entertaining political talk than you normally hear on mainstream talk stations.
 
I did not hear Wall, but I heard Bruce Jacobs from Phoenix, I could not tell if he was acting like he was melting down or really was melting down.

It is funny that ex-manager Bob Agnew made a big deal about some of kxnt's people being there as a result of a "contest." ("radio star contest") and fired them all. Now they are essentially holding their own contest, although it is among people with some radio experience.

Would a restaurant "try out" a chef? or different chefs? Buy the time you pick one, you might have lost many customers because of inconsistent food. In fact, even if all the food was good, it might not be the same "style" of food. People that go there for one thing might get another. Same with the radio station, no consistency in their product. Seems like management does not want to make a decision on hiring someone? "Man-up" and manage.
 
Kevin is a great pro. Worked with him at KUDL-AM in Kansas City when they were all ews. Kevin was the sports guy then, but has morphed into quite the talkmeister. Of course, KUDL-AM was also the stopping point of not only myself but one "Jeff Christie". Yeah, him....
 
I noticed the RJ and SUN laid off people, I think the bad Vegas economy is catching up to the media. I don't think Vegas much of a afternoon drive, the elections were a high point and it was down hill from there. The idea that the right host will come along and fire up the ratings is not rational.

They have two choices...hire the best host they can find or give up alltogether and flip back to music. They can also tweak other dayparts. How is the KXNT morning news block doing compared to when KDWN tried and failed with the idea?

I take it they officially hired Kevin Wall for PM drive? This is at least the third week he has been on.
 
An old friend called me yesterday and asked "Who is this Kevin Wall?, he's good". That's always a good sign. Actually this was the first time I heard anybody (other than Jason Suarez) talk about anyone on the radio in quite some time.
 
Wayne Alan Root seemed to talk too much about himself for my tastes, much of his show seemed to be too much libertarian movement stuff for the average listener. On the plus side, he did have a Vegas perspective since he lives there. A little sports thrown in always works as well.
 
What is interesting is that KXNT under former manager Jack Landreth had an ad campaign and series of "promos" that said: "Not racist radio, just great radio..." Landreth flat out said that Kdwn and Savage was "racist." Now Alan Stock is on KDWN. Does he believe that kdwn and Savage is "racist?" (He used to fill in for Savage at KSFO.) So the cheap shot comes back to haunt the station? It is way over the top to claim a station is "racist" in my opinion. I hope these stations compete in a civil fashion in the future.
 
It is interesting to me that KXNT has had Kevin Wall on afternoons in place of Alan Stock... To me, Kevin's manner of talking, expressing himself, pacing/pauses, and generally making statements, almost sounds exactly like, "ALAN STOCK". Listen closely and see if you don't agree. :eek: :eek: :eek:
Could it be that KXNT couldn't find any replacement to fill Alan's shoes and so they went with a "sound-alike" host?
 
Stock clone? That is a good point. Haven't heard Wall, but I noticed their are about 2 or 3 knock off "Pawn Star" shows on the tube. Maybe that is the new ploy, hire a sound-a-like and save money. Most dial flippers would not know the diff...I'd get some one that could bring in local advertisers,
 
If you type in "what happened" on a google search from Las Vegas "what happened to Alan Stock" will be the #2 suggestion behind "what happened to Darren Peck".
 
Good point, I did that from another market and got some radio people that had been fired.

They had the Frank Lefty Rosenthal TV show, maybe they should get someone like Frank Carlotta. Oscar (who doesn't like Carlotta) is too busy to do a daily radio show. Rita Rudner would be good, but she would be too expensive.
