Kevin Welch out at the Mountain.

I must admit that I liked the Mountain much more back in the Chris Mays days...however Kevin did manage some decent numbers. Wow...that used to be a great AAA...my how things have changed.

So you think that Kevin Welch (whoever he is) is such a remarkable talent that the evil Entercom just released him for NO reason? Really??

Boo! Bad Entercom for releasing little known air talent during tough economic times!

Yes idiot he was the PD and until recently this cowboy got good numbers :-\ Kept to himself in the building but did a good job. Got to wonder if Chris Mays is coming back, she has been seen in town :-[ My bet is someone internal will program the music for now and see what the PPm brings though wouldn't split your saddle if KMTT was number one in the PPM :p

For the first time in years I have actually enjoyed the Mtn. and now they fire the PD. Guess he didn't play enough Indigo Girls. Poor sucker...you should NEVER be fired for playing too little Indigo Girls.

Chris works with Ken Moultrie on their new consulting company. That could be temporary and/or could explain why you have seen her in the market. Definitely someone who has always had a good "ear" for the format.

So hold on there grumpy cow-poker.. (where's the frowney face emoticon?) In one breath this thread starts with Kevin What's-His-Name being shown the door and how things were so much better in the old days of The Mountain, yet now Kevin is such a great PD.

Could it be that Kevin didn't do such a great job and that's why he's been shown the door in a bad economy? No, I'm sure it's just because some corporate guy at Entercom was looking to fire someone.

If the shoe Fitz! Perhaps you had once talked to Kevin there at the Spam Can, that's why you're so upset.

If I knew Kevin, I'd buy him a drink. The poor guy probably did everything he could to not rock the boat and keep KMTT floating along (at least as well as one could FLOAT a "Mountain"......)

Anybody who worked with Kevin Welch knows that he was an awful manager. He was totally indecisive and down-right mean. He spread uneasy feelings where ever he went, and brought down the entire moral of KMTT's office. He was Jerry's man, and with Jerry gone, I'm sure this decision came quite easy. I say bravo to Entercom, because this time they got the firing spot on.

After reading am4life's post, this post is hilarious.

This news about recent changes in AAA Seattle is VERY closely related to ten years worth of changes in Portland, Boulder, SF, LA, and Burlington VT. It's really easy to shake a fist at the cool kids from the H.S. lunch table - for failing and consequently avoiding life after the glory days - but considering that it's a small world there on "radio and records island" I'll do you a favor and refuse to play along with the gossip gallery started here in this thread. Instead, let us all marvel at the unknown set of circumstances utilized by the Entercom buisness strategists. This story reaveals to us exactly how our leaders believe we ended up living inside a struggling industry and so long as a wise decision is made during the next part of the hiring process, there may actually be life on the otherside of the Mountain.

You, sir or madam, have a future as a government bureaucrat. WTF do you mean to say? Please try again.

It is always sad to seem someone fired from radio. I have found that Program Directors generally have fans and those who dislike them. PD's and Sales Managers are the definition of middle-management in this business and get grief from above and below. They also take much of the blame for things out of their control. Ratings and sales can be driven by marketing decisions, budgets, talent and more.

This makes me admire those station PD's who have lasted a long time in the same position. I am thinking of CC at KZOK and Becky B at KMPS. Kent Phillips at KPLZ and Eric Powers at KUBE. They have been in place for over a decade and their stations do very well in revenue and in their respective demos. A look at the Winter 09 book showed KZOK number one 25-54 adults and men and KMPS number two 25-54 women and number two 25-54 adults. KPLZ was number one 25-54 women and KUBE number one 18-34. Says a lot.

You make a good point Dan. In comparison to other stations in the market, it appears that for whatever reason Entercom seems to struggle recruiting and keeping GM's and PD's in Seattle. Whereas the posts of some others here rail on the turnover, citing Entercom as some sort of an evil entity for releasing poor performance, the relevant point being the numbers of attempts Entercom has made in attracting a consistently successful PD like Phillips or the PD at KMPS. I'm not sure if they are trying to cultivate the least-cost route or what, but I do agree that whatever their methodology in the Seattle market, it isn't working for the most part.

Now granted from what I've been told, AAA is one of the most difficult formats to program with the very narrow demo and reliance on the music industry to release music that appeals to the demo. Really, how many Jack Johnson's come along a year?
