KEWB NEWSMAN DIES

Darren Lane, famed former KEWB newscaster passed away last wednesday at age 83. Darren was also a newsdirector in the Los Angeles market at both 1280 KFOX and 1600 KWOW. Darren was most recently general manager at KCAA 1050 San Bernardino.

That would be Daren (with one "r") Lane Flickinger, who, according to the KCAA website "anchored the highest rated news broadcast in San Francisco for almost a decade."

Somebody will have to let me know what radio station(s) he was at during that decade, because I have gone through hundreds upon hundreds of hours of KEWB newscasts and cannot recall the name Daren Lane whatsoever. Was he a newscaster at some other station here before that, on television or radio?

If he was a newscaster at KEWB working alongside Casey Kasem, The Real Don Steele and Robert W. Morgan, as his obituary notes, he would have been there from at least 1961 through 1965 (after Casey's arrival from KYA and before RWM and TRDS departed for KHJ).

There's more info on the KCAA website (http://www.kcaaradio.com), which also provides a link to his obituary in the Riverside Press-Enterprise.

During the 60's even some newspeople were using different names on the air. Perhaps this guy was one of those. Numerous jocks were either given or took on air names. I didn't check the obit, but they might not have noted that unless family members gave it to them. Just have to ask...
