KEX 1190 AM

It's 7:30PM, and KEX 1190 from Portland is coming in so clear it feels like I'm only 10-20 miles away from the transmitter. I confirm that it's an S-9 signal, and I'm using the backyard door "antenna". Has anyone gotten KEX so clear?

What is your location?

Greetings from eastern Oregon!!

"Has anyone gotten KEX so clear?"

Yup...'course, being able to see the transmitter up in the Portland hills from your balcony on a clear day helps, too ;o)

Matter of fact my cousin and I are staying in Pendleton, OR right now, and the last couple of nights I have been able to get KEX and KKAD on my Grundig Yacht Boy 400 and my Sony ICF36. Both are a bit scratchy and they do tend to drift, but they are still quite listenable. I don't know what my S-metre reading would be (the Sony doesn't have one and the signal metre on the Grundig is practically worthless for anything other then strong, local signals) but just as an estimate, I'd say it would probably be about 3 or 3 1/2 the last couple of days. (That's taking into account that the metre goes up to 9 or 10.) So tonight I'm going to see if I can catch KXL and KPOJ.

Funny thing about KEX is its IBAC noise. I can't even hear the IBAC on either rig out here, whereas it practically smashes the main analogue signal at home.

In fact, it's a bit surreal. I'm hearing stations that are practically right in my/my folks' backyard (especially with KKAD, the transmitters of which my parents live only a mile and a half south of) just a little more than 200 miles away. It's quite an odd experience, really, as I have never really tried to DX any of those stations around here (Pretty surprised to read that, aren't you? ;o); I usually tend to DX the FMs from eastern Washington.

We're at the Red Lion Indian Hills, looking south toward Pilot Rock. Surprisingly enough, the computer/TV/compact fluorescent light/appliance noise (our room has a microwave and refrigerator!) really isn't that bad. Not as bad as it usually is back at the complex! I was really surprised to notice that.

In most areas of the West Coast, from The Sunshine Coast of BC down to Northern California, KEX booms in like a local - sometimes even stronger. Phenomenal signal!

KGO in San Fransisco takes the cake for sheer distance. I heard of people from Hawaii to as far away as Japan who have picked them up regularly at night. Their signal crosses over the North Pole and has been heard in Scandanavia and Siberia.

Seattle/Vancouver area AMs can also be heard in Scandanavia......

KEX was my first mainland catch when I spent my junior year of high school in Hawaii in 1965. Old Hallicrafters multiband receiver. Antenna was about fifty feet of plain copper wire. Modest but steady signal around 11pm Hawaii time. Subsequently, I've logged about a dozen or so mainland stations on my visits, but on this particular night, KEX was the only one present.

I've been in Hawaii numerous times and I've never heard KGO. Lots of west coast and in the past even midwest stations, WLS & WBBM could be heard in Hawaii. I've never had any luck with KGO. Their signal has a big null in that direction. I have picked up KNBR & KFAX.

"What is your location?"
My location is Bothell, Washington.

KGO does come in from time to time, but is weak, due to the DA being pointed up and down the west coast. Same with KCBS. KNBR is good most nights, as is KFAX and KTRB.

Crainbebo--
Of your list, these are the stations I DXed in Pendleton, many by chance:

KIRO (it's there...)
KWIP (surprising since I can barely even hear KWIP at home!)
KTRO (remarkably loud......or could that just be because they broadcast conservative talk? *honk* ;o)
KALE (loud day & night)
KOMO (loud & clear)
KLCK (fairly loud but fighting amongst several other stations on the same frequency; G'dale is about half-way between PDT and PDX. My folks own 20-someodd acres there that my cousin and I ride dirt bikes on in the spring & summer.)
KMBD (it's there amongst a mess of other stations)

I could *sort of* hear KDZR in Pendleton as well. Unfortunately the hotel is right across the street from a TIS transmitter on 1610, and that tended to splatter over onto it to a rather high degree using the Grundig. On the other hand, at the Wildhorse Casino just a few miles down I-84, it came in just enough to be audible, but no 1610 interference.

Of course, I could barely hear 1610 there either, being a supposedly "low-power" TIS but you know....... ;o)

The other locals not mentioned that I heard there:
KXL (somewhat strong at night, but gone during the day)
KEX (blowtorch at night and very faint day)
KKAD (only at night)
KPieceOJunk (seemed to be competing with about six other stations on the same frequency)
KPAM (faded in and out constantly)

I also got some Navtex stuff there off of 518, recorded it on Minidisc but I have yet to feed it into the computer.........

A lot of times I get KEX 1190 really clear in Clovis CA (in Fresno County).

In my travels, I have heard KEX in San Francisco, Reno, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Hawaii, and in 1975 I went to a family reunion in Weyburn, SK and heard KEX in a mix with WOWO when CFSL signed off at 1 AM.
