KEXP drops 91.7FM

From kexp.org.....

As you all know we have been trying to make a go of programming KXOT and thereby bring the wonderful music of KEXP to FM listeners in the Tacoma area. Despite sensational efforts by the KEXP staff, we have decided that it is the best use of our resources to concentrate on programming one station – KEXP – rather than trying to program two. As a result, we wanted to give you advance notice we plan to cease programming 91.7 FM at the end of this calendar year.

We've been programming the station since March of 2004 and as you may have seen and heard we've made an all out effort to make this work and given it a real go during these past 20 months. But, we've come to realize the financially responsible thing to do is to stop programming it in order to keep KEXP strong.

We will certainly continue our 20-year tradition of connecting artists in the Tacoma and Olympia areas to their first audiences. We thank our listeners who've stepped up to support our programming and operations in the South Sound these past twenty months.

We want to make sure listeners in the South Sound know they can turn to www.KEXP.org to continue listening. Several services are available including a variety of formats for live streaming, a 14-day archive of programming, and hundreds of archived in-studios performances. The station recently added a live stream designed for web-enabled cell phones and handheld devices, and a podcast service featuring full-length songs.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Tom Mara, at 206-520-5811 or via email, [email protected].

This sort of reminds me of the early '90s when KGRG briefly had control of 91.7's signal before Bates took it back in '95 and replaced it with something called "Classical Rock" (just your basic classic rock staples. No solo Rick Wakeman opuses I've heard) before they gave up 91.7 altogether to KEXP.

I would hope KXOT could develop in it's own right into a fine, badly needed local station for Tacoma. But such luck rarely happens these days.....

Programming and simulcasting are two completely different issues. KEXP never made ANY attempt to PROGRAM KXOT.

Translation: Listener giving isn't keeping pace with costs this year because we suck and we can't afford it anymore.

20 year tradition? Really...20 years? KEXP and KCMU are NOT the same thing and should never be considered as such.

I'm sure the fine folks that bring the rest of the country the "Klove" stations would LOVE to get their hands on that signal.

It costs about as much as a power bill at the tx site, that's how much....I really think that we've been hearing a bunch of BS about how much "listener giving" is really being given to KEXP...bottom line, it's all about the $$$

You mean all the press clippings and the ability to re-broadast on a cell phone isn't helping? Say it ain't so!

How could this happen? I mean, according to Larry, "KEXP is on a roll."

It's not about the music, it's about the money. Pledge early and pledge often.

You say that like we're new to the idea of business. Of course you need money to run a business. EVERY radio station is a business. It's how you use the money and how you run the place that matters. KEXP has integrity, morals and they actually freakin' CARE about the music and their listeners. No one ever argues that they need money to exist, but they blow commercial radio out of the water with the way they operate.

Uh-huh. Sure. OK.

And they're doing so good - they had to drop a SIMULCAST on 91.7.

Glad my 401K isn't invested in this station!

Aside from the power bill perhaps the right to simulcast on that frequency required payments to the owner, Public Radio Capital. I'm sure PRC didn't spend $5,000,000.00 for KXOT just so someone else would pay the power bill.

I find this whole thing perplexing. Bates sells their FM to Public Radio Capital for 5 million, which in turn leases (for a fee) to KEXP for one year? KEXP simulcasts their programming to Tacoma in hopes of raising more money to fund both stations. EXP bags out of the deal as quick as it got themselves into it, and now PRC is left holding the bag without any operator or operation. If PRC cannot remain on the air for 10 days or greater, PRC must file an STA with the FCC to go dark. This lasts, I believe, 4 months. After this, this station will be open to share-time or a complete takeover by another party. Something is VERY FISHY here. Why is PRC left without an operator now? If EXP needed out, they should have helped PRC obtain another local programming source prior to this announcement.

Don't believe EVERYTHING you read in the newspaper.

I think KEXP is planning on staying on KXOT until the end of the year, at that time I would NOT be surprised to see the people of K-Love fame make PRC an offer on either leasing or purchasing the station. I know they would love to take a bite out of KCMS

This wouldn't surprise me at all. Last time I checked, Educational Media Foundation runs both K-Love and Air-1. Let's also not forget other similar outfits such as Way Media Group, Calvalry Chapel, CSN... I'm sure there's more.<P ID="signature">______________

They can stay off the air for a year before they lose the license. That gives PRC p-l-e-n-t-y of time to find a new programming source. I presume that they could even strike a deal with KEXP to keep KEXP programming on KXOT (at no cost to KEXP) until PRC finds new programming.

My point exactly. This is a ruse to re-negotiate the deal they originally agreed upon.
