KEXP - Encouraging

Nice to see community support in form of many major local names (E. Vedder, A&N Wilson, etc.) supporting the KEXP move to the Seattle Center.

Always wished KING-FM had located their studio @ Benaroya. Think it would help with their visibility with arts patrons.

The Seattle local rock community is one of the strongest in America. Their names are names to be reckoned with and carry a LOT of weight in KEXP's favor. Cheers to KEXP!

KEXP is great, and their proposal for the center is a really great one, it would be nice to have a vibrant Seattle Center again a place where people can gather hear good music and enjoy what the city has to offer. It would without a doubt breathe some life back into the summer festival scene and you would expect to see all the major artists from this area follow the lead and get on board.

Why not add clowns too, it would be a easy move for 101.5 from across the street!

Based on this post and the previous one, I'd say you're a shoo-in for the clown gig.

KEXP just showed up right UNDER KFNK in the latest PPM.

As much as KEXP is "loved" by some in the community, apparently that community ain't so big.

KFNK has been beating KEXP in PPM for a LONG time, KEXP's "Eclectic" programming is a mess... and PPM is finally showing that they really don't have the big of a following.

I'm with the dude on this one. KEXP is a limited focus community radio station that appeals to a sliver of the citizens of the City of Seattle. The Center should focus on a more egalitarian approach for all of it's citizens.

Of course, I will say that I think Paul Allen stole KCMU (KEXP) from the Associated Students of University of Washington (ASUW) but that is a wholly different topic though it affects my viewpoint greatly. You can still see the tower on top of McMahon Hall, which overlooks the husky stadium area and U-Village.

If KEXP wants to move somewhere and be put in a fishbowl, I suggest they move back to campus at the HUB (Husky Union Building-Student Center).

And who is the licensee of KEXP? No, it's not Vulcan. It's the University of Washington.

I thought they moved their stick to be part of the KUOW/KCTS tower up on Capitol hill...but I could be wrong!!

I wasn't aware (until this article) they were talking about competing for the Fun Forest space. I would be more inclined to make KEXP an externally-visible part of EMP (then can use indoor Sky Church for concerts/live events) and, as you suggest, use the large available public space for more beneficial purposes. Seems like a win-win. I also have just assumed the Vulcan sponsorship is a benefactor deal -- though KEXP (formerly KCMU named after the code for Communications classes @ UW) SHOULD be a teaching vehicle if the license is UW. KUOW was always kind of the "polished student" outlet and the other station the "feeder". Now with more focus on product than education I don't know if that's the case or not. KUOW used to compete with KING for classical music -- not even sure if they do THAT anymore.

We also seem to be focused that every station needs to be a PPM winner as only barometer of success. I don't think that's the case for stations that ARE a little eclectic (including KFNK, and even to some degree the Mountain). As long as they reach the people they WANT to reach and make enough revenue (through pledge or commercial model) to cover their operation ... doesn't that mean they are successful? Not in an agency mind, of course...but from a business/mission standpoint? I don't know much about KCIS numbers, for example...but they've been at it a long time ... seem to reach the people they want to reach and never make the Public Relations radar as a "contender" in the big PPM race. I think that qualifies as a "success"?

Your average KEXP listener may donate money to keep it going but could care less about PPM. Too bulky, too busy for it.

Trust me, KEXP has more listeners than PPM will show but the average KEXP listener doesn't care about ratings or participating.

They're often highly educated people with busy careers and active social lives. Thats why you'll see them at KEXP shows, participating in pledge drives and interacting online. KEXP does have a loyal core that gets results for them, like most big non comms they operate "outside the system."

And kudos to them for it.

Yes, their current antenna site is on the KCTS-TV tower. McMahon Hall was the original tower site.

If KEXP and their listeners really WANTED KEXP to be mass-appeal, you'd be hearing KEXP playing Ke$ha and B.o.B. on 104.5 MHz (trust me, Paul Allen's $$$ can DO it.)

But there's a deeper reason they don't.

And that's how KEXP listeners like it. It might confound the folks who feel radio is all about numbers, but these people actually tune into KEXP to - get this - get AWAY from that kind of radio mindset. And Katy Perry's latest hit.

So by default, it's going to be a specialty station. It isn't like KRWM has any rockabilly, reggae and experimental music shows (and I would HATE to even imagine them on KRWM.)

But if you really wanna hear it, you have a place where you can get it on tap.

And Seattle's a better place for it.

These guys (KEXP) got front page on Seattle Times today on this Seattle Center project.

(if I were a nicer guy and had more time I'd dig up an online link...but I assume many of you are bored and need something to do so this is my contribution to you killing some time).
