Key West will get new FM soon at 96.7...A individual out of Arkansas will put this station on the air. I was one of the bidders for the permit, It was my first FCC auction and I gotta say it was exciting. I wish the winning applicant success. Cheers
According to the FCC FM Query, Status is "CP APPLIED FOR" on 12/19/2006 and the licensee is ADOLPHUS-WARFIELD out of Key West. It' will be a class "A" FM, Which means it's no stronger than 6kw & the stick is no higher than 100 meters or 328 feet. A Map shows it being in the Lower Keys, just South of Marathon, Big Pine Key & Cudjoe Key. Most likely in the main section of Key West.
No... This was awarded in a FCC auction...The winner is a Individual out of Arkansas. The Auction ended Monday, after starting on March 7th. I know the folks listed on the FCC database. They did not win. However the got the CP allocation open back in 1999.

Nah...Wouldn't couldn't do that. Stuart what ever happened to all the equipment that was at 96X ? I saw a picture of the classic harris board wonder where it ended up. Did another station take over the transmission equipment.
Someone told me that Cuba sends quite a strong signal on 96.7 and the US knows this so they are using this allocation to "block" Cuba... and when this 96.7 isnt on the air, you'll clearly hear Cuba.

Harris board? That threw me for a moment. At the time we had them, they were Gates Diplomat's. I tell ya, after 22 years on air, i'd rather have that 10 pot monster to broadcast with than any new slidepot system around. You could beat the livin spooge out of em, and they still kicked radio butt!
Most of the stuff from the station was divied up between the broadcast chain, KCBQ, KSLQ, WDRQ, WADO, WXLO, WMIL & WOKY. Some stuff was <sigh> put into storage at a place in Miami Beach, and when Charter didn't pay the tab, the owners of the storage place sold the stuff. When I found that out, I went thru the roof! Some of the equipment was also given to a few companies who Charter had outstanding notes with to settle the lien.
Alot of us wanted to take momentos with us, but..believe it or not, the minute I signed off the station, they had armed guards at the doors, as well as corporate people tagging every item there. I walked out with 4 gold records & the corporate engineer actually handed me a casio bazillion function calculator that was in the engineering office. I still have them today. I also walked out with the last song played on 96X. "The Long And Winding Road". As soon as we were officially done, I waited for the cart to cue up, grabbed it and didn't let go of it. NOBODY BUT ME was going to have that cart. It's still sitting on my shelf in my media room where I can look at it and never forget.

Why would the FCC or State be concerned with an FM from 90-some miles away that just barely gets to Key West, a very small city? Since Cuba is no longer a treaty signatory, it is probably that in DC they don't know what channel any Cuban station is on, and 96.7 simply fit the allocation table and was opened up.
Sorry Stuart...meant gates board..That is a great board. I feel the same way. Probably not too many of those floating out there today. Would love to find one on ebay.
On the other post. You can only hear cuban stations about twice a year when inversion rolls in.. most cuban stations are 0nly 6-10KW in power anyway. FM does not have mass appeal in cuba, and most of them are mono AM simulcasts, with the exception of a few.
Funny.. everytime my broadcast consultant drives down thru the Keys he's reported a pretty darned listenable signal on 96.7. When he heard it last, it was "Rebelde FM". According to him, this is not the only FM Frequency where he heard Cuba pretty clearly, but he does admit a local signal will over-ride it.

Rebelde 96.7 has always been audible but on a decent radio in the Lower Keys, every time I've been down there.
It was a semi-regular through early summer last year here in Clearwater (along with 3-4 other Cuba FM'ers) on the unusually long tropo openings we were getting. I can only hope the same happens this year.
