KEYE CBS 42 Austin dropping RTN... replacing it with Telemundo

Man! That Sucks! I hate to see Retro TV taken off in ATX on Ch. 42. It was suppose to sign on here in DFW in June KLDT Ch. 54.2 but hasn't signed on yet or if they ever will. They were the alternative to the trash TV that we see on all the other stations. I hope another station in Austin adds the network to it's sub channels.

Out of all the large markets I've seen it surprises me that Austin only has very few TV signals in that market. Make no sense that My Network TV (Which to most of us is no existant with the exception of WWE Smackdown) would have to share a signal with a CW affiliate on KNVA and that it can't be on it's own channel. I thought it was a good thing they had KBEJ (Now KCWX) Ch. 2 covering both San Antonio and Austin with UPN at the time while KNVA was WB, then KNVA messed that up by picking up CW the same time KCWX picked up causing some problems. Now KNVA is airing My TV as a secondary station on it's channel, I'm surprised KTBC didn't add My TV on it's sub-channel on 7.2 and also another alternative for programming that some of the other stations in ATX don't carry, not mentioned it's owned by Fox which probably would've made since for them to pick up anyway. Sorry to change the subject, but I hope people raise some hell over this about RTV being taken off and maybe 42 will change their minds.

Yes, there are a lot of digital offerings out there that the Austin stations could be taking advantage of, including LATV, ThisTV, .2 Network, Retro TV and Universal Sports. MyNetworkTV, already delayed 2 hours on CW affiliate KNVA, will slide back two more hours this fall, airing from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. And, as mentioned previously, once KVUE drops weather that will be yet another opportunity for someone.

Yeah I hope KVUE or any station in Austin looks at picking up Retro TV. Or better yet sign on an independent station in ATX that offers general entertainment programming like the old KVC-TV 13 did before picking up the UPN affiliation regardless whether it's full power station or LPTV.

i noticed that ch 14 kxam in llano changed call letters to thier sister local power station in austin to kbvo.

kvue or keye should have put mynetworktv on one of its subchannels, because i was dissapointed KNVA (CW affiliate) now airs it from 11pm to 1am this fall to make way for it 9pm newscasts (produced by sister-station KXAN), so wish this would happen so we can watch mynetworktv in primetime again.

Wow, RTN was the only other channel I watch on regular TV. I liked RTN a lot better than TVLand.

There's a thread over on the radio side about KEYE dropping its morning news and replacing it with a JB & Sandy (yawn) simulcast. All this says more about KEYE than anything else. Prediction.....within a year 42-2 will be more watched than 42-1 from 6-7 a.m.

This all sounds like more work for you, Fred!

Well at least football season is on now! ;)

For x-man and others: In late July I talked to someone who works at KNWS51 in Houston and he said they are still planning to carry RTN in Houston and Dallas. It will be sometime in October and the Dallas channel will be a sub-channel so he wasn't sure if it would show up on cable or not. They were planning to have RTN in June for the conversion but couldn't get a strong enough signal at that time. He did say he'd keep me updated.

This was mentioned on another thread. I haven't heard anything further.

Yes...

This is a stupid move........ Why cant they just add another sub channel?

RTN is probably screwing around making demands that are frowned upon....

I would send that channel an email guys and try as hard as you can to keep it on there!

i am EXTREMELY disappointed that RTV/ RTN Retro Network will be dropped for yet another spanish language channel (of which there are dozens; there is nothing like RTV for good Retro programming). A real shame. I really pray it will be back on in Austin on a another channel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who can we write or where can I protest!!????

What a mistake! Channel 42.2 will be the 4th Spanish language station in Austin. It would not surprise me if it finished in 4th place or lower. The Telemundo programming can be seen on channel 25.1 /25.2 broadcast from a little further away. There does not appear to be anything new here.

The retro programming offered on RTN demonstrated what television could be without gratuitous sex and violence in the golden age of television. This programming could be enjoyed by all age groups regardless of your first language.

Channel 42.2 never seemed to focus on running RTN properly. It was not unusual to have mistakes in the programming guide or information displayed on the screen when using a converter box. Messages sent to the engineering staff generally resulted in a half hearted reply but without any sense of urgency in resolving the issue.

The station is still looking for a place for Fred Cantu. I hope he is a success. It appears that this is a station without a plan but looking for advertising dollars.

This is properly a tipping point for me. I have not had satellite TV for several years but given the choice in Austin there might not be any choice. With RTN leaving, the only over-the-air programming now worth watching is KLRU 18.1/18.2/18.3 .

Thank you you for your time. I'd like to know what you think.

I imagine most of the problems were RTV's fault and not the fault of KEYE.

A lot certainly were. During the time KEYE carried RTN/RTV the company was sold, transferred, broken up and generally reorganized. There was one weekend during the move when it was a complete mess.

Methinks KEYE wasn't getting some kind of payment from RTV. Or maybe everything was on a barter basis and Telemundo (being owned by NBC/Universal) is actually paying real money.

Why do we need another spanish channel? At least change RTN/RTV to another channel. This is the only channel I really watch. Great being able to enjoy the good shows.

Why have three different "people" appeared in the past two days using their first R-I post ever to rip on Spanish-language stations? Just sayin'.

One of those things that make you go "hmmm".

i want to congratulate fred cantu on anchoring the news on the telemundo station. i believe you used to be on ktbc in the 70's or 80's , kvue , kvet and a spanish language radio staion was that ktxz or another one.

It was KTXZ. I haven't done Spanish on-air in 20 years. But I bring a lifetime of experience to the table including 30 years on-air in Austin.
