KFBK California Wildfires Sponsorship

I was listening to this station online and noticed that the California Wildfire Update had Sponsored By….

Selling sponsorships around disasters just sounds sad to me.

It does sound pretty greedy but let's run this past you. You have a media outlet. Your economic base that provides your income to operate your business and provide your paycheck is potentially going up in smoke. Your regular advertisers have cancelled their ads. You have businesses like insurance companies and others that want to get information out to consumers facing the fire threat such as things to do before you leave, what to do to help in an insurance claim, etc. Do you not sell this? And if the bills don't get paid, how do you provide the money to update listeners via radio when other essential services may be out? Sure, you might cite an example somewhere but that is because they have the money to survive without income, not a luxury many stations have, even if you're a big boy. Yes, it's nice to do everything as a public service but if that's good for radio, would it not also be good for you to, say take a day a week off work without pay to commit to public service? Could you handle the financial loss? Radio stations are a lot like regular people...way too many are living paycheck to paycheck. Greedy, I agree it looks really bad but in reality it might be a good thing for not only the listener but the station.

Unless it's a sponsorship that would be wildly inappropriate I've got no issue. It is true insurance companies want to get info to people....you hear those ads after every disaster. Banks wanting to spread the word about branches being closed, or how to get insurance checks deposited. Eventually home reconstruction and repair.

If I recall, the sponsor (or one of them) is a local contractor who specializes in home rebuilding and remodels. I agree it may be capitalizing on a disaster but on the flip side…hey we can help you when you’re ready to rebuild your home. I mean, I get it and let’s face it radio won’t turn down any advertisers, especially in this day and age. I think overall KFBK had been doing a pretty good job covering the fire and airing various press conferences from Cal Fire. Them again, that’s what should be expected when your FM COL is Pollock Pines.

I hear this too but also given that it's in California I know media outlets will talk about insurance companies, Red Cross, Home Depot, Lowes and Simpson strong tie as the sponsors at every disaster from Fires to quakes.

Looks like the 92.1 / 93.1 transmitter site was spared from the Caldor Fire. Most of the activity is along the eastern edge near south shore and into Nevada. Mandatory evacuation orders in the Pollock Pines and Somerset areas have been lifted and downgraded to warnings.
