KFBK on 107.1?

Why is KFBK on translator K296GB 107.1 in Sacramento?

Anyone know?

Could it be that the 92.5 simulcast is coming to a close. They probably haven't made up the revenue loss from dumping KGBYs format and over estimated that there would be a significant increase in the younger demos. They may even be gearing up for a simulcast with KSTE on 92.5...Yikes! It also may explain the News Radio, KFBK branding with no dial position.

The 107.1 translator (at present) is not good for market grade FM coverage. I see the CP to up the power, I still don't see how that would provide a decent signal into the Sac metro. I thought an FM translator had to rebroadcast an FM signal? If so, how could they flip 92.5? It seems pointless unless they plan to use the translator for Classic 93.1 or something like that.

I'm sure there's a reason we just don't know what it is yet.

An FM translator can rebroadcast an AM signal under certain circumstances. I believe all of those are met here with KFBK AM. The significant difference with this translator is that they are increasing power to 250 watts, and they can do so because the predicted coverage area does not exceed that of KFBK. Otherwise, at a HAAT of 77.5 meters the power level would be limited to 38 watts according to part 74.1235.

The EMF translators in the Sacramento area are now potentially more of a liability than an asset since they now have full-power stations in the market. A person listening to Air1 on 107.1 would lose the signal in parts of the metro. It's to EMF's advantage to migrate their listeners to one of the full-market signals.

What could they put on 92.5 if they move KFBK to 1071? Any formats CC is proficient at that fits their cluster? Maybe a different premium choice format?

Agree 100%, it makes sense for them to get listeners to KLRS and KARA. Between their two signals KLRS 89.7 (on Walnut Grove) and KARA 99.1 (Sutter Buttes), they've got the market covered.

I knew translators could legally broadcast HD sub channels, didn't know they could rebroadcast AM.

Thanks for the information.

Correction, 89.7 is no longer KLRS, it's KCAI. :)

Will 107.1 cover all the Sacramento Vally

Also will it be a good choice of CC moving KFBK to 107.1?

107.1 will not cover the entire Sacramento Valley nor the Sacramento Metro for that matter.

On a side note, I read an article on Radio Insight about how Clear Channel broke their AM/FM news/talk simulcast of KNST in Tucson to launch a new music format on FM. Others have commented that KFBK FM (on 92.5) could be nearing it's end. Perhaps you guys are onto something.

Just saw a comment from Scott Fybush, apparently we agree.

When did Clear Channel Sacramento launch KFBK FM?

Regarding the article about Tuscon, It is interesting to note that there has been a hot country format on KFBK-HD2 for a while now. Would they move it to the HD-1?

Ha! Let's hope not. :)

Don't we have enough Country stations with KNCI and KNTY?

The calls were changed to KFBK FM on 12/7/11...so just over 1 year.

Would another Country Station be overkill??

3's a crowd. Even if they wanted to tap into KNCI's audience, you're still fighting for leftovers with the Wolf. I think mainstream rock could be viable against 98 Rock. They could move the 93.7 HD-1 over...?? Another option is return 92.5 to a gold/soft AC...KYMX was #1 last PPM book. Either would presumably be more $$ than the simulcast.

Ok since we are all throwing idea's in the air and looking at the nasty stain Just lying there as it falls on the ground, The FM or AM goes all news with the other going all talk or "sports" and whatever station is on AM goes on the translator, but my guess its going back to Music, Full CHR a Sacramento version of KISS FM with Ryan Seacrest and Live Nation tie in's etc........ they need those younger demo's!
