KFBK's News Cruiser 1 is currently kaput.

I heard it on the air a few times and I don't understand the point... Why would someone report traffic from a car? Doesn't the newscruiser get stuck in traffic?

No, it's like doing news talk on the cheap. You get what you pay for, and the news-talk ratings slump isn't helping (though it doesn't seem to be hurting professional operations, like KGO, for instance).

Re: I was kidding.

Now hold on there...

As someone who, at times, has worked in the traffic reporting side of things, I can honestly tell you that with all the cameras that have been put up, flight coverage is becoming redundant and even more expensive. You would see way more camera coverage of the Bay Area, for example, if Caltrans would get it together and give the media more access to those cameras.

That said, there should be at least one plane up during drive times in Sacramento...But really, have you noticed any real change in the quality of your traffic info?

YES. When KFBK had Joe Miano and Commander Bill in the air, there traffic could not be beat. Now its nothing but a bunch of desk jockeys reading off computer screens.

Are you serious? You don't have your facts straight about Sacramento. Ask Caltrans how many cameras they have up on I80 in Sac? Thank you very much.

Caltrans has ONE 80 camera...

And Thank you! Caltrans may have "many cameras...on I80 in Sac" but if they're not accessible to radio traffic reporters, they're only benefitting Caltrans. Caltrans lists only ONE 80 camera on their website that can be streamed. 50 is loaded with streamable locations. I usually check News 10's website for 80 traffic camera's but even that is weak. So thanks for the plug for two qualified people that aren't there anymore - thank you KK- but give the listener what they want.
And this not directed towards you but more to the traffic reporters-Don't just report the traffic and problem areas...find an alternative route and let the listeners know about it. See how many people will tune into those reports.

Do you know what a pain in the ass it is to find an

alternate route? CC traffic people have enough hits to do per hour. Most people tune out traffic reports, anyway. And even if they do hear about a traffic accident, they're not going to change their normal commute route. I mean, explain all the people in gridlock if traffic reports have such an influence on people's commutes?

Re: I was kidding.

First of all, let's calm down juuuust a bit.

Second, if you really think Commander Bill knew what the hell
was going on down on the freeways while in the air, you really
don't know what you're talking about. His reports were almost
gibberish towards the end. Oh, and by the way, Bill had incidents
read to him over the two-way so he could re-report them on air.
So don't give me this holier than thou attitude about the KFBK traffic
coverage.

Joe Miano was solid as ever...But, he was only one guy.

As for the camera issue, I don't recall saying anything about Sacramento being 100 percent covered with cameras. I also mentioned something about a plane that should still be up. Apparently you missed those parts.

However, the Bay Area is basically 100 percent covered with Caltrans cameras, yet only a select few are accessible to media. But, all camera coverage will be about 100 percent by 2008...WATCH and LISTEN.

So, Mr. "ARE YOU SERIOUS"...please try actually READING my post next time
before responding to it...Otherwise, have a nice day.
