KFI Chief Engineer Passes Away

Word from Don Barrett and confirmed by a friend at CC Burbank that John Paoli Chief Engineer of KFI passed away Sunday morning. He'd been the CE there since former CE Marv Collins retired after KFI & KOST were traded to AM/FM (Now Clear Channel). No word as of yet about the cause of death. Met him more than once and can confirm that he was a good guy and very competent engineer.

My sincere condolences to John's wife, family, friends and colleagues.

I had the priviledge and pleasure of working with John, (usually at a bit of a distance), through the Jacor days and into the Clear Channel regime. A nicer guy you'd be hard pressed to find in this business. John was always ready to share words of advice, or humor, (usually simultaniously, and occasionally outrageously.) I distinctly recall the "interesting" few days spent clearing out the old KFI studios. My crew and I tried, in a nice way, to carry off everything that wasn't nailed down, (to finish building out CC-San Diego), while John and his guys, in a nice way, did their best to make sure that we didn't abscond with anything he might need later in Burbank... :>) Did I mention that the elevator wasn't working...? A true gentleman who will be missed...

I met John at the KFI Tower of Power party. He was very proud of the new stick, and did everything I could do to get photos, explain the tower, and just a class act.

Thank you so much for the kind words about John. I have been receiving a flood of condolences since his passing yesterday and it is so comforting knowing he was loved, appreciated and genuinely liked by so many.

Thank you again,
Starla Paoli

Starla

Starla, John spoke of you several times when we went to one of our (too few) Saturday morning breakfasts. John and I were planning another one, but with all the KFI stuff going on it didn't happen. Now I wish it had. John was a good friend and a great engineer too. He was also a gentleman. I am in shock at his passing-and I guess I should also take it as a wake up call as John and I have similar builds.

If there is anything you need or that any of us in the LA engineering community can do, please email me: [email protected]

John will be missed-by a lot of us.

Dana Puopolo

Starla,

You don't know me, but John and I bonded over our viewing habits as young men. Growing up in Northern California we found common ground with radio, Big Time Wrestling on Channel 40 and KTXL & KTVU horror movie host Bob Wilkins. John was a great guy who was always there with not only great information and a willingness to help but a great story and a big smile. All of us at CC Burbank are shocked and saddened at such a terrible loss. You and John are in our thoughts and prayers.

Bryan Simmons-KOST

John was an excellent human being and a first rate engineer. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to Starla and family, and to all the CC guys as well.
