KFI Imaging

Don't forget the real un-sung hero, KFI's Imaging Director for these many years Ray Avila. He's the writer and producer. Without him you'd just have a great voice and not much else.

I thought Ray left a year ago or so? I know they were looking for his replacement and a secondary imaging person for KFI.

Can anyone clarify?

Yes, Ray did leave town for a smaller city in the south looking for a better lifestyle for his family. However, he continues to
write and produce KFI's imaging from his new home studio. There is a secondary producer in Burbank, but Ray is still their
main writer/producer, and if Robin is smart she'll keep him under contract for many years to come.

The station does sound great, but what happened to the really long IDs? They've cut out a lot and are now just running a date and "Southern California's KFI...". OK, so that's a radio geek thing to say, but I miss all the creative stuff they came up with, so much that if I was driving around at night, I'd keep an eye on the clock for xx:58 just to DX the ID du jour. ::)

New orders from San Antonio. It's company wide. You'll be hearing shorter imaging on most if not all of the Clear Channel stations...

The news/talk stations are not really affected by the mandates.

True, but many of the news talkers will trim up certain elements that are deemed not necessary and the more successful music stations will not have quite the severe trimming that the less successful stations have to live with. KFI's changes may just be coincidence, but I'm not so sure...

Ditto! I've been doing the same thing here in SLC for three years or so. I remember the IDs sounded best around August 2004.

Chris Corley has a great set of pipes, but he's pretty weak when compared with
the late Mark Dennis. Mark knew how to phrase and actually read more than
one line. Mark had soul, and under David Hall they had the best news imaging
in Talk Radio. Now its an unlistenable mess, too much happening-no pauses
or breathing room.

I actually prefered the Nick Michael years when David was still at the helm. Nick can convey simple truths better than anyone I have ever heard. The imaging then was so engaging and without any hype.

Mark Denis was a wonderful human. His talent was unlimited. While he didn't possess the heavy pipes of Chris Corley or Nick Michaels he still had a superb voice and most of all he knew how to do more with a piece of copy than most image guys ever could. Nick Michaels was very good, but when he left KFI to follow David Hall to KNX the people at KFI had to scramble, and they didn't do badly at all in getting Corley. Michaels' contract must have been up or he had an escape clause because he left KFI pretty fast.

The only thing that perplexes me is why Hall dumped KFWB's new imaging voice right after he arrived. Beau Weaver is one of the best and had barely started doing News 980’s imaging. Now they use one of their staffers as well as Nick Michaels' partner who sort of sounds a little on the ordinary side. Guess they wanted someone who sounded like your downstairs neighbor. But then Hall has made so many missteps with those two stations it's not surprising...
