KFI kicked KABC's ass in school shooting massacre coverage!

Kudos to Bill Handel staying awake during his nap time and providing great analysis filtered through an attorney's lens, fortified by Gary Hoffman's most current info! (Bill Carrol would've been too insensitive and snarky).

KABC's coverage, on the other hand, was lame lame lame! They pulłed out of Geraldo and went to Doug Mackentire & Terry "Mumbles" Elmer on the commentary.
They went to a press conference too prematurely, and when there was a press conference out of Newtown, CT, Doug & Elmer were still pondering while KFI had the conference live.

No surprise why 790 KABC is ranked #33 in the market!

Yes, I listened to a little of KFI's coverage and thought it was pretty good. Good move to dump Rush and react to breaking news.

Bill Handel, Gary Hoffmann and Chris Lane stayed on the air until 2 pm; then John and Ken started their afternoon show an hour early.

Bill Carroll is on vacation this week. His replacement for today was going to be J. R. Martinez, who in 2003 was an Army infantryman serving in Iraq. When his Humvee hit an IED, he suffered severe burns to 34% of his body. He now is an actor (All My Children), dancer (Dancing With The Stars) and motivational speaker. Bill Handel spoke with him briefly in the noon hour today and promised him he would get another chance to host a show on KFI but right now the listeners are hungry for details of the Connecticut massacre. Latest details correct earlier misinformation: The shooter was Adam Lanza, not his older brother Ryan; the mother was shot in her own home; the father lives in Stamford and knew nothing of the shooting until he returned home and was greeted by news crews; Adam's girlfriend is missing; there may be other victims in other locations.

When a major news story breaks, does anyone ever think of turning to KFWB anymore? Probably not.

KFWB was the first thing I turned to whenever an earthquake hit Southern California. Especially in the days, weeks, and months after the 1994 Northridge Earthquake after an aftershock occurred. Nowadays I just go to the USGS website.

Pasadena City College's station, KPCC-89.3, has also had excellent coverage of the Newtown massacre. They simulcast on KUOR-89.1 in Redlands and KVLA-90.3 in Palm Springs.

Until early 2010 when KPCC moved to a new studio at 474 S. Raymond in Pasadena, the station was located at Pasadena City College, and the college holds the broadcast license. I was referring to the station's license holder and not to the program suppliers.

I tried to watch a Talkeetna, Alaska television channel but the picture had snow. :D

I was both shocked and disgusted when I tuned into the last hour of Larry Elders show and heard him laughing and talking about the NFL. On one of the most tragic days in the history of this country he can't find it within him to pay respects thru his entire show.

I pray KABC wakes up and sends him home.

Even the guys at ESPN affiliate KSPN took time out from sports to discuss the massacre. Larry Elder uses that dumb sound effect of a gavel being banged---maybe we should get a gavel and bang him on the head. By the way, Larry, all those NFL teams you talked about observed a moment of silence today (or will do so Monday) in remembrance of the 27 dead. (The killer is #28 but he doesn't count.) Some players (including the Giants and Patriots) are wearing Newtown decals on their helmets. Some players are wearing #26, the number of victims at the school. The Kraft family, owner of the Patriots, is donating $25,000 to the community. What are you doing, Larry?

Who assumed KABC had a "24 hour news center"? McIntyre is a commentator whose bias is clear. Teri "Always Mumbles" Elmer has no idea what she is mumbling through most of the time. John "She's RETARDED" Phillips is the worst broadcaster ever to speak before a microphone.

News? KFI beat KABC on the story and kicked the rear end of KABC? Oh.

I would never in my wildest dream think of tuning into "legendary" KABC for breaking news. You kidding?

Maybe my 2013 wish, elsewhere on this board, will come true: Dump the KABC Morning Mess. Give the three on-air people (and that so-called exec producer - Oh God!) severance pay - and show them the exit.

KABC Management: Don't you know how many competent, outstanding, in-tune, real world talk people are available? Most with a Los Angeles background in talk who have the historical knowledge and institutional memory of the marketplace and the people unique to SoCal to build a great morning drive show? And a team that will take listener calls on a talk station! Taking calls on a talk station! What a concept. Worth a meeting (or ten). No. It is so, so simple as to not require a meeting (or ten meetings). Just a PD with guts who wants to challenge the top stations and will not be satisfied with poor talent or with rock tossing people who say KABC cannot excel due to the signal. The signal.

In dispute resolution the key is PROCESS. In talk radio it is PROGRAMMING. If done well and right, both will pay off with great rewards.

Don't you guys at Cumulus know that you just cannot have any bigotry on the air, a la "the RETARDED girl" raped on the bus comment - a repeated description, btw. Who said it? Morning Mess resident b---- Mr. Phillips. Give him credit, though. His comments are consistently bigoted, wrong, insulting to groups who, seemingly, are not are pure of heart and mind (and color) to suit his gentle soul and disjointed view of the world. (Frankly, I don't think either one of his sidekicks like him, either. The vibe on-air does not work.

That you don't need McIntryre doing sex jokes and doing "come" jokes.

But news? NEWS? NEWS? KABC? Please.........

Take a meeting, KABC? Leave me a note here. Mr. Young will be happy to help bring a 33 share up. I was with ABC, Metromedia (KLAC/KMET) here and I think I was the youngest talk show producer in L.A. history. Also, young newsroom producer KLAC.

"Compelling" programming. KABC? News? KABC? Listening to their news promos, what stands out to you? (It is really simple). If KABC management guesses right I will bring a box of See's when we "take a meeting." Let's not let the candy go as stale as KABC programming is.

For several years, Don Barrett ran an annual listeners poll on his LARadio.com website. Among the questions were "Which station do you turn to for breaking news?" KFI and KNX were consistently the top two. I can't say for certain but I would guess that nobody said KABC. There ya go!

Speaking of KFI---which, after all, is the topic of this thread---they're reporting that Nancy Lanza was seeking conservatorship of Adam and intended to put him in a mental institution. She had also done volunteer work with the kindergarten class at Sandy Hook Elementary. KFI afternoon hosts John Kobylt and Ken Chiampou speculate that Adam killed his mother because he did not want to be instutionalized and that he killed the first-graders because they were kindergartners last year and he felt his mother loved them more than she loved him.

I know there is a discussion of the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre in the Specialty forum but this story is worth posting here too, in the hope that people can become more aware of "warning signs" and maybe prevent a massacre before it can be carried out. In a story written by a US editor of The Sun and titled "Inside the dark lonely world of maniac Adam Lanza," the 20-year-old is described as having lived in a windowless basement room adorned with posters of guns and tanks; he played violent video games and "plotted massacre." KFI has also been reporting on this; the details came from a plumber who was occasionally in the Lanzas' basement. It's too bad he didn't speak out sooner.

Today KFI afternoon host Bill Carroll said that he attended a Christmas show at his son's elementary school. At one point, a group of first-graders came on stage and Carroll started counting: "One...two...three..." There were 20 children. Carroll said seeing a group of 20 all together made him think, "My God, that's a lot of kids! And a group that size has been killed." He said a friend has a daughter who appeared in a production of The Nutcracker, and at one point 20 kids came out dressed as angels and carrying candles. Many audience members started crying and some had to leave the theater. We're all still in shock.
