KFI Major Schedule Change Starting Tomorrow

Handel's 71, and as I think I said earlier in this thread, that's the one that would keep me up at night if I were KFI's PD.

Now that they're in middays, if you start to hear John and Ken covering Handel when he's on vacation, that's a clue.

I don't mean to look like I'm trying to pop your balloon on Rush, but when I was at iHeart, we were very surprised that he renewed his contract for another four years in January of 2020. We were absolutely expecting a retirement announcement after the election.

Of course, the cancer diagnosis was just one month later, so we'll never know.

I'll say this: At one point only a few years ago, my thought was that if I felt good and my voice held up, I'd like to work until age 75. Now, I've been overseas, my grandchildren live 2,000 miles away and four weeks of vacation seems inadequate for all the life things I want to do. Don't be surprised if any air talent---Handel, John, Ken---starts to feel the same way. Especially if the money is already in the bank.
Ya got a point bout rush dude. See thats why I don't understand when people get up in years not so much 70s but more mid 80s and beyond regardless of profession don't retire like Art Lebow or Mitch McConnell or Nancy pelosi etc...Why don't people just go enjoy there lives???

Tim Conway Jr isn't but a few years behind John kobylt but look at Handel in his 70s going strong. But who knows. I remember right after John Ziegler got let go at Kfi they had Bryan suits and Kennedy fill that then 7-10 time slot. Kennedy went on to do mornings on Alt 98.7 and look at her now she is on Fox business sometimes on THE FIVE.

Some talk show hosts will work well into there twilight years. Not a talk show host but look at Art Laboe worked well into his 90s. Rush God rest his show I bet would have done the same.
Rush would feel obligated to keep on going in these times. But radio was in his blood and it would take a lot to pull him away anyway. We all observed how he valiantly did everything he could to be on air as much as possible (and to keep the attention focused on the show, not on him) right up to his final days.

Michael, the more you talk about Rush, the more I feel you truly have never understood the man. Please do not take offense, none is intended, but the loss is indeed yours.

Everybody's different. Art was only doing one show a week. Maybe it helped him stay sharp and live so long.

I do NOT want to get into another umpteen volley thread here, Flip. I'll just say that once again, you've taken a factual statement of mine---this time about discussions that were being had by affiliates---and somehow construed it into an issue of my understanding of or like/dislike of the man. It's simply not so.

Sometimes money is more important plus power and prestige

I bet it wasn't money for any of those three. Same principal as the actors on the cast of friends. They never have to act again if they choose not to. There 20 mill in residuals will last them past there lifetimes. They do it for the love of the craft I assume. Politicians do it for the power and radio people stay hanging on I feel for the love of the craft.

John and Ken are talented resenters of most everything that CA is, though they may like Mickey Mouse. For anything they ever did, they cost CA $200 mil on Gov recall. Tiring listening to two who never had many life struggles, rile against anyone struggling. They just happened to benefit decades ago when KFI dumped them, and they were replaced by an entertaining gay couple, one of whome dies of AIDs, giving them a second chance. I'm trying to remember if I've ever heard John be grateful of anything-now for a multi-millionaire, with his own show and fairly good health, its a talent to stay that upset for 4 hours every day. That's endurance. I may have missed any part of any show that they did anyone a good deed, or public service, another rare trait.

If I recall correctly the "entertaining gay couple" was a ratings disaster. It was definitely terrible radio. KFI admitted its mistake by bringing J&K back as quickly as possible. Clear sailing, so to speak, ever since.

I think he is being short sighted for I bet John and Ken both struggled just like most when they first got into radio. Ya know what they say about luck it's where hard work and opportunity meet. There show is great. Wonder why it never went over on Kabc?

I think John Phillips r Randy Wang r even Brian Whitman b great contender when Mr Handel retires. I don't agree w Mr Whitman's politics but he is very talented does great impressions

I'd bet money Gary and Shannon will slide into Handel's spot after he retires.

But he seems to really like doing the job (he doesn't sound tired). He talks about going to a voice coach (probably to stay sounding young). And as someone just over half his age, I find his show among the most engaging in all of talk radio. So, I don't expect him to bail out anytime soon — health permitting.

I just wish he limited the his terrible edgy jokes. I can tell everyone else on his team just gives him pity laughs. I can’t imagine anyone actually finds that stuff funny. I wish he would stick to the interesting topics and stop with the edge lord cringe fest.

The cringe is the joke, though.
Be it a very bad pun or something in very bad taste, that's the schtick: Everyone sits there in silence for 3 seconds. Maybe Jennifer scolds with a "Handel!" Then he says, "Let's move on."

It's a pattern that's nearly as old as the John and Ken "baseball" schtick. Where Ken tells John something to get him mad. And just as John is seething, with a smirk Ken says, "Well, let me tell you this..." and adds another upsetting detail about the story (tossing the ball) which makes John apoplectic (bat crack, home run).

It's 90% act, since they are each putting on a good show. Handel does the puns/tasteless jokes to crickets because it works. If it wasn't working, he's talented enough to stop.

I feel like cringe only works as viable humor for a very specific demographics. He's pretty good otherwise, that is until he decides to slam the breaks on his show by trying to inject his terrible sense of humor in it.

KFI takes another big step moving away from politics. Tomorrow night's State of the Union address will not be aired on KFI, instead it will be aired on 1150 KEIB. Mo said they will do counter programming with no political talk.

It looks like anything political will move over to KEIB.

John and Ken being the last right leaning angry white man talk show in the line up, are becoming more out of place on KFI. Wouldn't they be better suited if moved over to 1150? I think this would not only help improve KEIB, but if they gave Wayne Resnick the 1-4 slot, KFI would be listenable all day long. Wayne as part of Handel's morning show and usually first choice for fill in is one of KFI's best and most underused talent. No one deserves a chance more than Resnick to get a full time show on weekdays.

I really like listening to KFI...except between the hours of 1 to 4.

I wholeheartedly agree. John & Ken is basically unlistenable at this point. If I wanted to hear boomers complain about everything and not understand anything I'd just log in to Facebook. I love the days where Wayne hosts for Handel. He'd honestly be perfect to take over for him when Handel eventually retires. You've basically replaced Handel with a better version of himself.
