KFI received in Tampa! (video)

I'm up so much later than I should be but after listening to 640 for more than 2 hours and hearing nothing but the usual, KFI finally snuck in for a little while and peaked in signal strength just after the top of the hour.

The only other time I heard KFI here in Tampa was early 2009 but I couldn't get it on video.

I finally got the video catch I've been waiting for.

It's not that strong a signal but certainly good enough to hear the KFI news ID at 29 seconds into the video.

Congrats!

I caught KFI from Hialeah (near Miami) in 1982 or so, but that was a time when (a) the Cuban was totally off for months, and (2) the FCC had get to sprout up all the new US fulltimers on 640.

We have a semi-local here now (WMEN "WFTL") in addition to the Cuban. <shrug>

Last night, I was initially listening to 740 in hopes of getting an ID from the weak background talk station and I noticed how KTRH was blowing away WYGM from Orlando and consistently.

That made me think the overall signal strength was favoring the west on other frequencies too, so I figured I'd keep an eye on 640 just in case something appeared among the usual slop.

I eventually started to hear what sounded like Coast to Coast only from the WNW because the voice matched the one I was hearing on KTRH which had Coast to Coast at the time.

Then at the top of the hour, the signal on 640 was getting a little stronger and as soon as I heard them say KFI, I ran to get the camera ready for the next station ID and I got it just in time because the station faded again.

Was in Yakima from Saturday to Wednesday and got on 640 nothing daytime, KGVW Belgrade, MT sunset and KFI after dark.

Other good catches made:
710 MEXICAN--NOT CUBA!
720 WGN Chicago, IL (1619 miles)
830 WCCO Minneapolis, MN
870 WWL New Orleans, LA!! (1985 miles!) Heard w/ mention of ...105.3 WW... in the mess around 8:30PM Saturday 10/16
890 MEXICAN fighting with KDXU-UT
900 MEXICAN fighting with many others swapping, CKBI, etc.
1060 ABC News fighting w/ CKMX Calgary about 4am
1200 WOAI San Antonio, TX (1674 miles)
1250 KLLK Willits, CA w/ regional mexican (508 mi, just IDed online)
1250 unid C&W w/ Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis briefly over KLLK/KWSU
1500 KSTP St. Paul, MN
1520 KOKC Oklahoma City, OK
1540 KXEL Waterloo, IA
1570 unid w/ EWTN, likely KPIO Loveland, CO, had to be on daytime power late, 18w at some 870 miles is almost impossible in this messy AM world
1580 Mexican prob KBLA Santa Monica, CA??
1600 Oldies w/ Classic Countdown Show
1600 unid ESPN Deportes, sounded like two w/ ghostly echo
1650 KBJD Denver, CO at sunset, some 900 miles
1700 KVNS Brownsville, TX full ID at 880w!! (1890 miles)

Farthest I got this trip was WWL at 1985 miles.

Congrats on KFI, gar! I heard it in there too, so that would be enough for me! According to Radio-Locator, KFI is 2,133 miles from Tampa. Give or take a few miles from that number as I don't know exactly where you are in the Tampa area. This also bests my KFI distance by 255 miles, but it looks like you have a very clear path to Los Angeles on 640 with only MAYBE WCRV and WWLS to contend with. KFI was very difficult for me, as WOI throws every single one of their 1,000 nighttime watts right in my direction.

Next for me is KNBR from San Francisco or CBU from Vancouver. KNBR would be 1,988 miles away for me and would be my new distance record. CBU would tie my current high-water mark of 1,890 set by KNX last winter.

The biggest thing I have to contend with on 640 is the annoying Cuban station which is so strong, it comes in good even in the day. There's also another Spanish station I only hear in the same direction of LA.

I'm still looking for KNBR too but that's a jammed frequency here even when I null out the local.

My priority is KCBS. This week has favored stronget signals from the west and less WYGM. I'm getting frustrated listening to the other talk station on 740 behind KTRH. The Canadian station on 740 from Toronto is not a regular here so that's not any issue.

I still think it has more signal going my way than the station in Tulsa but of course, it's a greated distance too.

KCBS' night pattern won't favor FL. I heard it (I think) back in the mid 1970s when nothing else was there at night here in south FL, but I wouldn't wrack my brain over it. Likely the other station was Tulsa.....I heard it on my trip 2-3 weeks ago, and I think I was driving thru SC.

Thanks for the tip, Mario. I'll have to also maybe try listening to the online stream to hear the voices at the time. Even with the delay, that can still be helpful at times.

South Carolina is much more north and east than where I am and their signal has a narrow lobe right in that direction.

Look at the FCC signal pattern maps and you'll see KCBS sends most all of it's power in a wide lobe to the SE. I'm in an ESE direction.

I'm not saying I think it's impossible to hear the station from Tulsa but according to their signal pattern map, it's not favoring my direction nearly as much as KCBS.

It appears to me that these stations and maybe several more could be heard from coast to coast these days, or almost coast to coast. I often hear KXEL and sometimes WOAI at home. I once heard WOAI in Oregon back in 2007.

ZNS1 Nassau on 1540 is still gone, due to copper theft. Believe it or not, I've never heard KXEL, and 1540 Albany I haven't heard since 1975! (not that I've given much effort)....I'll keep trying. I did hear the words "Gretna-New Orleans" on 1540 the other night....I didn't know there was a fulltimer there!

[Update: I sure hope it's some other station mentioning Gretna/N.O., or I misheard.....no night authorization at all for KGLA!!]

I'm about 300 miles from KFI and was listening to it on a Cheap portable and when It faded out I heard a few seconds of Classical Music before KFI faded back in, does anyone know what I heard?
