KFI Suspend John and Ken until next Tuesday

J&K are out for insensitive remarks about Whitney Houston. The station suspended them for two days.

Here are the comments.

The remarks in question, said by KOBYLT on TUESDAY's show and circulated , said of how people in HOUSTON's life likely dealt with the singer's decline, "She's been cracked out for 20 years, and we heard how obnoxious she was these parties, I mean, she's doing handstands, she's babbling like an idiot, running around ... she's a mess ... She's been doing this for 20 years....

So were they suspended for offending Whitney's fans or for pointing out her so called friends and followers didn't give a damn and let her self-destruct.

Seriously, I think the wrong people are being blamed here.

What was so bad about that? Sounds like an excuse for suspension. What's next? An excuse to let go high paid talent?

I wasn't surprised she died. Sure, it's a shame. It's also a shame she ruined her amazing talent with drugs and alchohol. Maybe her friends and family should have staged an intervention years ago. She is the only person that could have stopped her self-destruction.

Ratings stunt. Also, Monday is a holiday so they were probably off that day anyway.

It's a non-event that involves a long holiday weekend as others have noted. While sad that Whitney Houston self destructed, the fans/public had her on a pedestal. Of course, she has to want to be healed too. I feel sorry for her daughter as much mud has been slung about Houston's last days.

The suspension is until the 27th. A little over a week. I understand the primary trigger was J&K referring to Whitney repeatedly as a "crack-ho."

Unless they are suspended without pay it amounts to an unscheduled vacation. Same thing happened to Handel a few years back. One thing is certain they will not be fired nor will they quit over this.

On the other hand when you hire people to be outrageous and controversial and then reprimand them for doing what you hired them do seems a bit disingenuous.

Of course it could be just another publicity stunt so who knows.

What station does this Eggelletion broadcast on? He complained? A couple of national talk host have had drug and alcohol problems too?

Carroll just said that Handel will be on at 4:00 today.
Oh boy, he's going to be cranky as hell.
Handel and J&K are far from best friends forever so he may have an opinion to weigh in with.

J&K actually manage to kill three birds with one stone on this!

1)Turn a 3 day weekend into a 4 day weekend

2) Get more positive pub for the show (THANK YOU and a big hat tip to whoever this bottom-dwelling no-name radio slug is that brought this whole issue up)

and

3) Get somewhat of an arch-nemesis Handel to fill in for them on their shift - he has to work while they're home by the pool!

Well played John and Ken!

Oh, and what are the odds the Handel will say something worthy of suspension himself during the shift?

This is really just a pre-emptive PR move on Clear Channel's part. They have other stations in the cluster that play Whitney and/or cater to her fans. They don't want to lose any billing on KOST, KBIG, KIIS or KHHT from a Clear Channel boycott. Better to look like you are pro-active and take charge management and diffuse the situation early than to let it build and lose any money.

And believe me, it's all about the money.

bs. hype. i bet they are still paid..........they have lost a lot of credibilty recently. good lick kfi most of us see through the bs

I think they were already scheduled off next week, so it's an early start to a planned vacation. They return on Mon Jan 27. Whatever the rationale/background/story, JK made a major apology, very strange for him.

A bit surprised that they were suspended, I thought they were pretty much untouchable at point, but at least they managed to turn this into a four-day holiday. When I heard J&K going off and laughing about Whitney, even though I've been a staunch J&K listener, they kind of pushed the envelope on this one so I turned them off but didn't expect them to be suspended.

The first thing KABC's John Phillips tweeted the moment Whitney's Death was announced was a joke about Whitney and how Columbia must be hurting. Isn't that insenstive? Shouldn't he too be suspended? KABC management where are you?

But I guess no one listens to his show and follows his tweets so no harm done.

Heard J&K talk about Whitney and pumped my fist in the air saying "Yeah! You're saying EXACTLY how I viewed Whitney!" Had there been more of a time lag, this wouldn't have been an issue. Interesting to hear Ken apologize at the beginning of HIS show (via ISDN line from home) with the sarcastic, insensitive & droll Bill Carol conducting the interview.

But Bill Handel was REALLY interesting pinch hitting for the final two hours (he wasn't cranky at all sans mid-day nap!). Maybe Cheapchannel can save money by paying Handel for both am AND pm drive! ;)

Only thing missing was ... a topic of if J&K should've been suspended!
