KFI takes over KOGO news

mid-days and early eves ... stay tuned.

Well I am shocked to learn.....that there was still a KOGO news operation to take over.

While AM/PM drive would seem to be a given for a local Sandy Eggo
news presence on KOGO, based on the info presented (KFI handling
middays and early evenings), there was no mention of late evenings
and overnights.

Is there currently no KOGO news staffing on air from 9pm-5am or
thereabouts?

For that matter, is KFI live and local on the hour, on the half, and
when news breaks...24/7?

Clear Channel news motto: "When news breaks, we're on break"

It is sad: when something serious hit the fan it used to be you had KFMB and KOGO to turn to for full coverage - now though you go to KNX with Tom Reopelle, who is the last real field reporter in San Diego (and yes I've heard the KPBS crew and they are Serious Journalists, not radio news reporters).

Serious journalists with caffeine.

I remember in the days of both Jacor and AM-FM, Inc., the slogan was "When news breaks out, we break in." I know that was true from the station I listen to occassionally WGST in Atlanta, GA. They gave up that slogan when their producer Paul Mann moved to Houston, TX to work at KTRH. Last I remember, KTRH is using that slogan these days from when I last listened to them via internet. Now, either KTRH will become the regional news affiliate for Denver, CO's KOA, or KOA will be the affiliate for KTRH. Of course, this is exactly what is happening with you folks in Southern California with both KFI & KOGO. I guess you could say they've pretty much reversed the slogan they were committed to for many years. This time, the slogan says "When news breaks in, we break out." Thus if a Cox Radio affiliate is near you, they are your best bet because they're committed to giving you the news on the hour, the half, and when it breaks. If there aren't any Cox Radio affiliates near you, you're out of luck unless it's severe weather. If severe weather is in your area without a Cox Radio affiliate nearby, a NOAA weather radio is for you (regular or hand-held). If I digressed I apologize. Whoever wants to get back to the topic at hand is welcome to do so. Thank you.

I have no issue with the KFI news staff, who are a fine crew. I do have isse with no live-and-local new coverage left in San Diego. Media gurus like to refer to everything south of Ventura as the "Southern California Metroplex", but I'm not buyin' it. What's news in LA is not necessarily news in SD, and vice versa.

Just in time to complement all those layoffs at the U-T, too. Boy, their timing is impeccable.

Severe weather in San Diego? It's an oxymoron unless you're talking about a fire storm!

KOGO is a big joke. Jim Charvet and 2 traffic reporters splitting duties those are your journalists. Deb Welsh gone and b4 that other San Diego news pros. Traffic reporters must be shaking in they're boots because from what I've heard traffic may be outsourced to L.A.

Or Phoenix.

Sunday: 1030 a.m. newscast. KOGO-AM: Mark Evans. 1030 a.m. newscast KFI-AM: Mark Evans! Wow, Mark has talent and to do a stereo newscast talkin' about San Diego on AM 600; and LA 'things' on AM 640 and that's super de special. It must be the HDRadio factor! The Illuminati! Space Time Continuum! It certainly wouldn't be done for $$$; the prime directive from the Radio Federation is that newscast are live and local! That's the premium factor.

I'm sure Bob Hudson has it figured out.

yea KOGO and other stations really serving the public interest these days...wasn't that part of lic renewals....maybe this has changed......god help radio :(

What's puzzling is that KFI has a significant audience in San Diego. It makes it painfully obvious to anyone who cumes both stations. Oh well that's radio in 2009....Sad.

It would be nice if KFMB would use more resources from Channel 8 and build a stronger news presence in the market. :'(

Don't forget KNX 1070 has a huge audience here as well including yours truly. They have a San Diego reporter stationed here. I know at least 20 people that I work with that listen to KNX down here most of the time for news.

For that to happen, Midwest would have to give a cr@p about radio. Those days are gone.
