KFI Tower Lights

I've noticed that they have been using the daytime strobe lights at night instead of the standard flashing red lights. This has been ongoing for a few weeks now. Does anyone know why they are doing that?

My guess is some type of issue with the system that switches the tower lights from white daytime flashers to night time red.

I know it's not really the norm on the West Coast but the white strobes are a common thing at night in much of the rest of the country even in residential areas shining right into homes. Is there some sort of explanation as to why most California sites blink slow red at night? Would it be too much of an eye sore to see all strobe towers on mountain site such as Mt. Wilson from all over town and miles away?

Here in the Palm Springs are (where it will be 120° on Monday) there are several directional systems near the 10 freeway (I-10 to the rest of the nation) with strobes at night. But on the airport side of the 10, there is another direction much nearer the ariport that is red-lit. I have no idea why there is any difference.

...just a hunch that strobes would be hard on pilots' vision at night whereas red lights are not. Hope you enjoy the 120 degrees...not much difference here in Phoenix. But at least this time, airlines at Sky Harbor will have the necessary calculations to take off in hot and dry weather. Most of them couldn't do it in 1990 when the temp reached a toasty 122 degrees. YIKES!

Seems to me the strobes were added for towers built after a specific year, perhaps in the 80s?

You can always try Needles, Bullhead City or even Furnace Creek in Death Valley!

KJZN in western Fresno county uses the strobe both day and night. Only one I've ever seen around here do that, seems like most of them in this area are red all of the time.
