Can someone explain what went wrong at KFIN in Jonesboro? That station tanked. Who's the program director? Do they need a program director?

I live in Jonesboro currently, but spent several years in LR. I think Jonesboro is the best radio market in the state, Little Rock included.

Larry Duke selling KFIN to Cummulus led to Cummulus selling to Clear Channel led to a 25kw KDXY kicking it's butt. When I worked in radio here in the mid 90's, KFIN had a 50+ share in Craighead and surrounding counties. After KDXY switched from AC to country, they hired most of KFIN's talent away from it and the rest is history. Don't look for a comeback anytime soon, if memory serves me correctly, it's third or fourth in the latest arbs -- besides it's owned by CC.

I worked at KFIN back in 93 when Clyde Bass was GM. Clyde was the one behind the success of KFIN. When he left KFIN he took the magic with him. Clyde is one of those rare GM's that comes from programming and it sure was fun working with him. KFIN did everything with a strategy in mind...nothing was said or executed without a reason and a plan. Very cool place to work back then. By the way, I agree with you about Jonesboro being the best radio market in the state. Although I have not been to Jonesboro in a while...the last time I listened, the market sounded much better than what I hear around the Ft. Smith and Northwest Arkansas area.

>KFIN has Phil Hunt, from Little Rock as their RVPP and a host of other constulatants at their disposal. KFIN did not tank as one post said, but a closer look reveals that the MSA is only one county. KFIN, KISS both are 100,000 watts sticks and clearly lead the TSA every time. Because Jonesboro is a regional center, it only makes sense that they would do well in the TSA. KDXY is 13,500 watts and hardly makes it out of the county. Those figures come from radio-locator if someone wants to check them. According to my contacts at KFIN, while they might suffer in a 1 county metro, they continue to be the top billing cluster by well over 50 percent according to Miller-Kaplan. Their new legends station, KWHF is 3rd in the Metro. So at then end of the day, as always, if the group is making their number and KFIN is the #1 biller in the market, I don't think anybody cares about their ranking. When they fail to the make their numbers, somebody might take notice. Clear Channel is probably very aware of the 1 county metro issue there. If it were me, with the clout that CC has with Arbitron, I would change that in a heartbeat.

Clyde & I are old college pals from Arkansas State. He & I were at ASU for the same 4 year period. He was stellar in his professionalism them, and nothing what you said about Clyde surprises me now.

He is currently in my neck of the woods (in the Mid-East) working at a successful Cumulus cluster in Youngstown, OH/Meadville, PA.

Oh, and he's won his share of awards, too. I remember when Clyde started working for KFIN, too.

He's definately "one of the good ones".<P ID="signature">______________

>i live in jonesboro as well and i personally like the fox(KDXY) better. i dont have to leave the county much but on occasions when i have gone over to memphis, i have been able to get the fox all the way to downtown memphis and have been able to get it pretty clearly. the fox seems to play longer blocks of music. a lot of people i know feel the same way. but everyone has the right to an opinion
