KFJZ 870

Hey Guys:

I noticed that KFJZ is now Spanish Religous. I thought it was Super Tejano 870? Was KFJZ always Tejano since it went on the air Feb 28 1986?

Thanks

Fort Worth's 870 has been around for a long time, starting in 1947 as KCNC, airing a variety format. Ten years later it switched to KJIM (generally easy listening), then in 1984 it began airing standards ("Music of Your Life"), picking up the format and calls previously on KFJZ 1270. That didn't last long and Super Tejano did indeed come on in 1986. KFJZ switched to religious programming in 2006 as a Spanish version of the Catholic programming that began airing then on KATH 910. More details can be found at www.knus99.com/amlist.html by scrolling down to 870.

The Feb 86 date is off a bit, but not by much. I worked at 870 KFJZ in the Summer of 86. At that point, 1310 KAAM had become the official "Music of Your Life" station for DFW. But we were playing very similar music. I think it was Fall of 86 when 870 went Tejano. I wrote about this recently in Jim Rose Remembers Radio. http://news.jimroseremembersradio.com/ Just
scroll down to issues 865 & 864 & look in the "Emails, Yes We Have Email." section.

Hey TJ - you've already done this drill in California markets... there several people who have thoroughly researched and documented the history of DFW radio stations. Why don't you just email them directly for the information you're looking for?

There was a point around 1980 when known as KJIM 870, was doing a country format (basically classic or heritage country).

Things have changed at KFJZ lately, it appears. I noticed that they're simulcasting Radio Saigon (KTXV 890). That makes sense, I suppose, since 890 doesn't make it into Tarrant County that well from their transmitter site south of beautiful downtown Eustace.

Hey Guys:

I found an article saying that KUQQ 1540 was the first station in Dallas to play Tejano. It changed from Tropical KTIA in 1983.

Did 870 start out as La Pantera 870 then Super Tejano 870?

Would anybody know the history of KJIM 870 from when it was Easy Listening till it went Tejano?

Thanks

T.J.

870 was Music of Your Life & Unforgettable using the KFJZ calls 1984 - 86. I think someone wrote on here recently that 870's final days as KJIM were Country. Through most or maybe all of the 1970's KJIM was Easy Listening. That's all off the top of my head, others feel free to correct if my memory is off a bit.

That's what I recall: KJIM was Easy Listening until at least the middle of 1978 and when I was working for Dick Zimmer and Gus Jones at KTER in Terrell from February through July 1980, KJIM was country, but more of a classic country format.

Hey Guys:

Thanks for all the responces. I found this in the broadcasting yearbooks:

KJIM FORMAT: 73 Listed as Beautiful Music

KJIM FORMAT: 74, 75, 76 Listed as MOR, Dance Band

KJIM FORMAT: 77 Listed as C&W

From 1974 to 1977 could KJIM's format be Big Bands?

T.J.
