KFJZ 870

When did it become an Asian format andaren't they supposed to power down at sunset?, it's bleeding terribly over WWL out of New Orleans as well. Depending on whatever way I turn my radio I can receive both signals.

They've changed their site & power from when I was there in 86. It was one tower, 250 watts, daytime only, then.

IIRC The 250 watt site was just east of downtown FW, near where 121 splits off from 35W. This was during the KJIM incarnation.

Yes, it was at 2214 East 4th. In the early 1960's KJIM-FM (forerunner of KFWD/KTXQ) was in a closet and fully automated, initially operating with a blistering 2,890 watts from a side-mounted antenna on the AM stick.

When I first hit town and went to work at "The Eagle" in 1987, 2214 East 4th was KEGL's "Arizona Wavier" studio. In other words the "city of license" studio (KEGL-Fort Worth) while the "real" studio was at 222 Los Colinas Blvd in Irving.

If I remember correctly J.D. Ryan did the Sunday night talk show from the 4th Street studio in Fort Worth to satisfy the Arizona Wavier requirements. I'm not certain how that all worked back then (I've slept since then), but at the time IIRC we were required to originate some programming from Fort Worth.

It was a cool little dump. A classic little studio/transmitter site with a late 50's early 60's layout. Inside was the usual assortment of Gates consoles and a late 60's early 70's vintage Harris (I think) transmitter which when I took a look at it was running about 120% negative modulation and sounded pretty hammered. At the time it was running a Spanish language format.

A neat old place...

It was a fun old building. In 86, it was "Unforgettable 870" playing a format similar to "Music of Your Life." Or, is that "Music of Your Wife." ;D I forget.

:p "Music Of Your Past Life"

::) "Music For What's Left of Your Life" ::)
