KFMB RUMOR

Don't hold your breath.

Considering that KFMB is now 20th in 25-54, I don't think we have long to wait for some kind of action. Low rated news talkers can't be helped by moving to FM or doing a simulcast... only good ones.

Which begs the question, if not a simulcast with the AM right now, what will they do with 100.7 in the short term? Might they stay with JACK, or is JACK a money hemorage for them? When I was in San Diego over the break, I noticed that they played a lot more disco and motown than the networked JACK we have out here, and there was no Oldies in San Diego at the time. But now?

The Fm and the Am are 7th and 11th in 2007 billings, so the FM is a decent performer with a lower cost format. In 2008, the change in market rank (now 17th and out of the top 15 markets) will definitely hurt all stations as far as national and regional business is concerned. The whole market will likely be off around 15% compared with 2006 in fact.

The whole speculation about either changing is likely premature. The logic of such a change will become increasingly obvious over the next few years, and if market and station billing continue to decrease, eventually a decision has to be made (FM is off a third in billing since 2000 and the AM is off about 15%).

What about the expense of the talent in 2000 vs. 2008? That has to be less. Did the former team eat up 33-percent??

KFMB-AM shut off the Stereo pilot in 2001. I can't imagine KFMB wasting a good FM signal with talk. The AM signal is great they would gain absolutely nothing with the FM.
If anything I would put sports on the FM. Sports on FM will work, and games sound amazing in stereo! And I personally believe that FM sports will make money, and if they can steal the Padres away from 1090 the station will beome the sports leader especially with a legendary set of call letters like KFMB

They would gain considerably in 25-54, the sales demos. Right now, 64% of the AQH listening is 55+. That, in a nutshell, is why the station is around 20th in 25-54 where the money is.

It's not about stereo. It's about the two generations who have grown up on FM and who don't use AM because it sucks.

And I personally believe that FM sports will make money,

Well, there is a smaller trend to moving Sports to FM, such as detroit and now Portland. In Detroit, the move is apparently working very well.

and if they can steal the Padres away from 1090 the station will beome the sports leader especially with a legendary set of call letters like KFMB

"Legendary" is a horrible and misused term in radio, where you are only as good as the last time someone tuned in.

In any case, there are a number of very successful sports stations without play by play; pbp is often money that comes in the front door and out the back... and is only useful if it is a big image enhancer or brings in non-pbp sales.

Really?
Another sports station in a market that already has 3? (Xtra points if you can name the third one!)
Sports was already on FM in San Diego, and the Padres and Chargers are already on FM. So what would be the point? Do sports fans really care whether it's FM or AM, so long as they can hear the game? I suspect not!

The 3 sports stations are:

1090 XEPRS
1360 KLSD
ESPN 800

and sometimes Bonilla has spanish ESPN on 620

And if we had an actual good sports station there would be no need for the others.

and concerning the use of the word "legendary". To refer to something as beeing legendary it refers to something being great in the past, and people still having fond memories of it.

Here are a list of legendary call letters in this market, and David I don't really care if you agree or not.

136KGB, 1170 KCBQ, 600 KOGO, 76 KFMB, KFMB-FM (B100), 910 KDEO, 1090 XERB, KKLQ (Q-106), KyXy 96.5, and KSON AM and FM. The greatest air talent in the world has been on these stations. And for the most part we will never see the level of talent ever again that we saw on these stations. All of these stations had a huge impact on the city of San Diego, and on the San Diego culture. KGB and KCBQ had a national impact during the 60's and 70's.

But I would rather KFMB-FM do something musically with the station that is worth listening to instead of doing any sort of talk.

And just for the record AM does NOT suck. And only a snob know it all would even say that it does! If you learn how to program people will listen to AM or FM just look at KFI and KOGO, both have amazing ratings compared to FMs, and them being on FM would gain them NOTHING!

David stick to LA radio (where you are), where radio is just as twisted as you are! Keep your AM bigotry to yourself!

What you have done is make a list of stations that, in some era or another, had big ratings in San Diego. Many are not legendary beyond that.

The greatest air talent in the world has been on these stations.

A number of very good talents were there, but certainly not the best in the world. And, since you don't know anything about the talents who might have been on Radio Luxembourge or Europe ! or the Beeb or 3KZ or 2SM or.... hundreds of huge stations in other countries, I'd stick to SoCal where you might make this claim.

All of these stations had a huge impact on the city of San Diego, and on the San Diego culture. KGB and KCBQ had a national impact during the 60's and 70's.

That is a gross exaggeration. Well known, yep. National impact, other than McCoy's syndicated Last Contest, nope.

And just for the record AM does NOT suck. And only a snob know it all would even say that it does!

Survey an adequate number of 18-45 year olds and you will, once you get by the "what's AM?" stuff from the 18-24's, find that AM is definitely perceived to suck big time by those under 45 or 50. This is why in most markets, the under-45 share for AM is 10% or below and dropping.

If you learn how to program people will listen to AM or FM just look at KFI and KOGO, both have amazing ratings compared to FMs, and them being on FM would gain them NOTHING!

It's allready been proven that conventional traditional N/T gets great 35-54 increases if moved or simulcast on FM. SLC, Phoenix, Jacksonville, Charleston, Talahassee, Dayton, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Nashville, etc., etc. prove FM talkers do much better in sales demos.

David stick to LA radio (where you are), where radio is just as twisted as you are! Keep your AM bigotry to yourself!

I don't do just LA radio. In fact, a coupla' years ago I was PD of a SD station for a number of years...

You still don't know what you are talking about.

David,
I want to express my sincere apology for causing you to be needlessly bashed, yet again. I see now that David is 100% correct, about what he was saying. Let me give everyone a little inside baseball as far as talk on 100.7 is concerned. Years ago when I was an even lower lowly board op at Q106, I suggested that perhaps Star 100.7 would be better off dropping the music and going all talk with Jeff and Jer in the Morning and Jagger & Christi in the afternoon. We used to joke around the station that you could drive from the stadium all the way back to Kearny Mesa for about 20 minutes and never hear a single song on 100.7. More to the point, Mark Todd was even getting ready to run commercial spots about how Star was all talk talk talk, while Q106 played more music. This was all based on research. But that spot NEVER ran, because Star was kicking our behinds, and Jack Evans pulled the plug on Mark (who is a good PD by the way). So the talk on FM was working, and I used to think that Star 100.7, which had Chargers games too, was as close to a modern day Full Service station as you could get, with equal amounts of adult pop and talk.

What David is suggesting is correct, and proven. You don't have to agree with him, but please, can we give him the respect he deserves? I think it's like having someone like Les Moonves, or Randy Michaels take time out of their busy day to tell us the business, but you wouldn't think of disrespecting them, would you? So let’s be nice, and David, I am sorry I brought this on. It is too bad I never was in the same circle long enough to learn about the business from you.

Garrett,

I don't know who this David is, but you shouldn't be in a circle like that. It's disgusting.

Talking about things from different points of view is what makes these boards interesting. Don't appologize for raising interesting points of debate. There are plenty of people who are not actively involved in radio, or in positions where they are not consulted about policy who have very sound ideas and who, often, have not bought into the "we have always done it that way." mentality.

I looked at billing for the top 50 markets for news and talk, and learned a great deal as part of researching support for my opinion... so the discussion was worth it.

And... I appreciate the compliment greatly.

No, but the internet is full of ignorant people...

"Welcome To The Stations Of The Stars!" Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald and more! The Fabulous 100.7 FM!!!

A key group of words here is "busy day". Too busy for almost 13,000 posts all day long and half the night? Posting for us groupies and wanabees? Nah. They'd be here if they weren't so..well, busy.

Garrett-Perhaps you should grow up and think for yourself. You're acting as if this guy discovered radio. The
deference you give him is absolutely sickening. I know Dan Mason of CBS well, but if I discovered that he
was posting multiple times here on daily basis, I might lose a little respect, or think he didn't have all his oars in the water.

Eduardo-is an expert in all facets of Hispanic radio. That's it. He may have opinions on
other formats, but that's all they are. Is he good with crunching numbers & research
absolutely: that does not make him an expert in mainstream formats. If he was, he would
be out there doing it. Not constantly posting on the boards.

One of the reasons he perhaps receive all the respect he deserves is just who self-righteous
and argumentative he truly is. You're on the outside looking in on the business, I and many
others besides David are on the inside and pretty damn successful. I don't have the time or
interest in racking up 2,000 posts I have work to do.

Were some of the corporate executives to spend a little more time talking to listeners, participating in groups like this and getting out of their offices in general, they might have a better idea of how to run their stations.

Eduardo-is an expert in all facets of Hispanic radio. That's it.

Actually, I spent most of my life in general market radio in markets where, simply, the local language is Spanish. Doing Top 40 in Quito Ecuador is absolutely no different than doing it in Kansas City. In fact, my best, albeit too brief, lesson in Top 40 came from Todd Storz himself. Winning in Buenos Aires is probably harder than winning in New York... not because it is bigger but because there are many more viable stations.

And if you look at it, Hispanic targeted stations are the mainstream stations in markets like LA, where non-Hispanic whites are far fewer than Hispanics.

He may have opinions on other formats, but that's all they are. Is he good with crunching numbers & research

No, I would not. I happen to like the people I work with here and abroad, and would not change it.

Not constantly posting on the boards.

When you travel millions of miles, or way over 100,000 of them a year on a single carrier, you have lots of time in cars and cabs and airport lounges. Groups like this are a global communty, and are fun. I learn as much here as in any other facet of my career.

Well, there is a smaller trend to moving Sports to FM, such as detroit and now Portland. In Detroit, the move is apparently working very well.

And, FWIW, it was also done very recently in Denver - I think it's still too early to tell on numbers, but Lincoln financial dropped jazz on one of their FMs and is now simulcasting their sports station, AM 950 The Fan (KKFN?).

Hey, FWIW, KFMB-FM dropped yet again in the 12+ numbers that came out yesterday. So, don't know if that'll fan the flames of this rumor or not.

I probably can't quote exact numbers here, but Jack had been low, and is now lower.

It must be something near an historic low for the frequency, unless during the final days of B-100 it had gotten way down there, not sure about that.
