KFMB-TV's new look

KFMB-TV, San Diego's CBS affiliate, has dropped the familiar CBS affiliate look of the red rectangle with the frequency channel for an austere version with the 8 in gold next to a small CBS logo on what probably is a blue wave underneath.

Are all CBS affiliates doing this?

Sort of...
I don't know about all the local affiliates, (although the local CBS affilate here in Lubbock is indeed blue, gold and white), but most of the CBS Owned and Operated stations are changing their name and logo to "CBS #." For example: WBZ TV in Boston is now "CBS 4," as is WCCO in Minneapolis, also, "CBS 4." KYW in Philly is "CBS 3," and WBBM, KCBS, WCBS and KDKA are all "CBS 2." WJZ in Blatimore is "CBS 13." Most of the logos have a big EYE and then the number: <o>2 for example. So, in that way, KFMB's new logo is simlar.

The difference of course comes with the design. Channel 8's new logo is gold and a bit more 3 dimensional. Most of the Owned and Operated logos are White on a Blue background. Exeptions inlcude WCCO, WFOR, WJZ, and KTVT. KCBS and KDKA have been blue and gold. So the main distinction here is the tranparent background, the 3 dimensionalism, and the fact that KFMB is NOT a CBS O & O.

Also, notice that they have gone back to the long time "News 8" name. I bet research showed that the audience did not take well to the "Local 8" label.

Personally, I like the new look, it looks pretty cool. NOw if they could just spruce up their website...

Not quite...yet. WCCO-TV has retained the branding of "WCCO 4" and for news, "WCCO 4 News". KDKA-TV is basically "KDKA-TV", even "KDKA-TV News" (Eyewitness News was dropped years ago). Same with WJZ, which is still using "WJZ 13". Not sure what KUTV in SLC is doing, though the news branding is still "2 News". Though in all cases, the CBS eye was indeed slapped onto the logos.

In these particular markets, the call signs still have enough viewer recognition and heritage that Viacom has yet to go the CBS # branding route. That's not saying they might go the route in the future. In recent years, KPIX has been virtually dropped for "CBS 5", as has KYW for "CBS 3". Same for WBZ and "CBS 4". Of the big 3 networks + Fox, they're the only ones who haven't forced all O&Os to go the network+channel number route and all but eliminate call letters (save legal IDs).

Those outside of San Diego can see the new KFMB look (and return to "News 8" branding) at http://www.stephenarnoldmusic.com

KFMB certainly looks and sounds big league now, and in my opinion makes them really stand out and very dominant compared to the icky stuff one sees as its competition.

I never really got the whole "Local 8" thing. I mean, I knew what they were trying to do, but it just didn't work. I remember laughing my ass off when some anchor announced a story filed "from our North County mobile bureau" which, of course, was just a fancy way of saying "remote truck"...

KNXV in Phoenix was covering some of the heavy thunderstorms a few months ago and had two units out in the field. Bill Bellis, their chief met, threw the shot to one of the units, " we now go to so and so in Storm Unit 97 near Gilbert" and then later it was, "here's a report from so and so in Storm Unit 72."

Re: Remote trucks

What I like is how some TV stations here in San Diego don't even have any station identification decals on the side of their trucks!
