KFNN 1510 Gone Silent?

KDUS is also fed by 100.7 HD2. None of the HD or translator arrangements have to change, even if 1060 and 1440 swap formats. Besides, I don't imagine too many people listening to KDUS after dark unless there's live sports happening (usually never that late). Pretty sure it's all just syndicated programming during the off hours.

But who am I kidding? In 2026 it really doesn't matter what's on the AM since they both exist at this point to serve as primary stations for translators and HD radio. As standalone stations they both would've probably died off years ago.
right. anyone complaining about 1440 should be able to hear the HD…. and if you refuse to try the HD you’re just stuck back or refuse to change

Me personally, I like the old school AM sound, but I'm definitely in the minority with this one 😆
Yes, the old school AM sound could be great, but that old school sound had 8 khz (sometimes a full 10 khz) of bandwidth, and nobody's broadcast with that kind of bandwidth for decades. By comparison, today's AM sound is cat farts.

Actually, for the FCC Proof Of Performance annual test, we'd measure out to 12 kHz if I recall. Most of us would measure out to 15 kHz, too. The FCC did not always have the 10 kHz "barrier" on AM audio, and many stations tried to sound good way beyond the 8 kHz that you mention.

If you look at the specs of AM transmitters from the 50's and 60's, you will find that they all go out to 12 kcs if not to 15 kcs.

Does KDUS have any local shows now or is it all nationally sindicated shows? Looking at the programing schedule on the station's website, it looks all national programing. Except ASU womens basketball, ASU Baseball and NAU football. So, I would say it's pretty cheep to run.

Their only non-brokered local show is the 11am-1pm slot, which pushes Jim Rome to a one hour delay seven months of the year (not that that matters in a world where his show is available live in many other places, if you're a fan). The rest of the local talk is brokered.

It seems Hubbard has given a slight bit more effort into the station than Sandusky ever did. They aren't trying hard to find a time-filler network other than VSiN, though. There's Westwood One, which has less sports betting content, but still has some.

Chris Schubert, the host of the 11-1 show, also serves as the station "sports brand and content director" per his LinkedIn, so he's not just a one-hat on-air talent for the station.

Regarding our Beardsley digression, I learned today that Beardsley Rd, an E-W street in the far north of Phoenix that terminated at the whistle stop near Sun City West, was paved over to build the northern E-W segment of Loop 101.

Don't expect anything to change at KDUS. Hubbard has been successful at monetizing their AM's, and keeping them relevant with brokered programming. In their Seattle cluster they have all brokered "Alternative Talk" KKNW (in the format for many years now). Even Oldies KIXI pays it's way with 4 hours of brokered programming daily from 8-10 am and 3-5 pm. As long KDUS is making money, nothing will change.

KKNW was another Sandusky-era oddity that they continued. I guess they think that as long as they make money, they're happy.

27 hours a week from one producer and then most of the weekdays are the same..so its mostly low effort, with probably jus ta few board ops and maybe a production person. Talk about making revenue

As an update, the Liquidating agent for CRC Broadcasting has filed with the bankruptcy court to sell KFNN 1510 and K287BX to Heartland Signal, LLC for $420,000. Heartland owns WCPT(AM) 820 in Chicago. They have also filed to sell KQFN(AM) 1580 to Sierra H Broadcasting, Inc. (KZCE/KAJM) for $150,000. No mention of K240EU Tempe. Will be interesting to see if this all gets done in time and the stations get back on the air before the silent deadlines

Of course theyll come back on in time, otherwise they wouldnt be selling them. The liquidating agent can do it or the buyer, with permission from the seller can do it before the sale closes.. it can be a long wire on a roof if needed under special temporary authority. the sale doesnt need to be approved and be consumated for something to happen

Sierra H can now save money from leasing KMLE-HD3 for Mega. It would make sense for them to take the 95.9 translator too (unless KNLB wants it to go with its co-channel translator on the White Tanks being fed by KYOT-HD3).

What will be interesting to me is if Heartland Signal decides to use KFNN to rebroadcast WCPT's commercial liberal talk programming with, or without, local hosts. From my perspective, if that is what is done, that would be a relief from the relentless pressure of conservative commercial talk in the valley on the frequencies of 92.3 mHz, 550 kHz, 960 kHz, and 1100 kHz.

Downgrade 1510 to 250 watts non directional, day only and what it would cost to build that is probably about 12-18 months of lease fees for KMLE HD3

If a liberal falls in the forest....

That format worked so-o-o well on 1480. 🤪

Does this include the tower lease? I don’t think Salem would be happy for a “progressive talk” station broadcasting from one of their towers.

Or at least move 1580 back to the KXEG tower and lower the power so that it’s still in 99.3’s coverage area. Then activate an HD2 on 101.1 or 104.3 for expanded coverage with those who have HD in their cars.
