KFNN 1510 Gone Silent?

1440 and 1510 are awfully close for a diplex. The bandwidth might end up so narrow that the audio would sound like that of an old pay telephone.
Then, what would be a good tower site to diplex? The 910 site? They could run 10,000 watts there and theoretically reach Mesa and the 105.3 translator contour.

Hubbard Radio?

There is a reason 1440 had another nickname besides the Lamptimer.. it was called the Lumberyard for a very obvious reason

I'm quite sure that if the Salem talk show hosts aren't happy about it, that the business side of the company is fine with the tower arrangement. Keep in mind (as @KillowattKatt pointed out above) that the WCPT folks paid about twice as much for a (relatively) inferior allocation as H. Sierra did for the 1580 kHz station. Also keep in mind that Salem is more financially stressed than it has been for a long while and I'm sure the company's business side will be very glad to have somebody else assist with the tower rent, even if that somebody else expresses on-air views that are diametrically opposed to what one hears on Salem stations.

Much of that price for 1510 included the 105.3 translator, which is directional toward a heavily conservative and affluent area, and basically useless in the West Valley.

And how about TMISU, and their two sticks sitting in the 6~20 sports parking lot. Nice and tall, and centrally located.
The question might be whether there is space at the base of each tower for the diplexing ATU as well as space in their transmitter room for another rig. I saw the transmitter about 50 years ago, and they had a typically sized 5 kw hollow state giant and an auxiliary. With today's very small similar power rigs, I do think they could fit two transmitters for another station in the same room along with their newer units.

What? And displace a bunch of day laborers in the diplexed Home Depot/WalMart parking lot? Shirley, you jest!

Ken Brentlinger’s LPFM Broadcasting will purchase Silent 1580 KQFN Tempe/Phoenix AZ from CRC Broadcasting’s liquidating agent MCA Financial Group for $150,000. A Time Brokerage Agreement will take effect ahead of closing. While KQFN’s current translator 95.9 K240EU is not included in the deal, LPFM Broadcasting owns 99.3 K257CD Phoenix which is operated by Brentlinger co-owned Sierra H Broadcasting as Rhythmic AC “Mega 99.3” currently fed by Audacy’s 107.9 KMLE-HD3.

Good move to own the primary feeding station, in case the lease falls through with Audacy. The move for Sierra H to put Mega on KQFN should happen soon, as there is a time brokerage agreement in place. I'm assuming they will be on the KOY tower?

I’m betting $20 that 1580 was bought specifically to be the primary for the translator.

Let’s say between the purchase price and lawyers fees and engineering work it comes to $250,000z

If they’re paying$10,000 a month for the HD channel lease, buying the AM will pay for itself in 2 years. 2 years of HD lease fees just paid for the AM and etc and no more lease fees. no ongoing cost except electricity and legal fees for the AM/ttanslator

I agree, that it makes sense financially. Plus, its best to be owning instead of renting. That puts you in control of your future.

Forgive my ignorance but I've always genuinely wondered this:

How do you get an FM Stereo quality feed to a translator using an AM station as the primary? I'm sure there is a simple engineering explanation but I've always been curious.

Using an internet webstream or microwave studio to transmitter link.
No one is feeding an fm translator with an actual AM signal.

You are allowed to use an Studio Translator Link (usually internet Barix or competitive vender) to feed audio to translator. Just like regular FMsThis is especially nessecary for daytime AMs.
