KFNN PSRA/PSSA

Lookee what I found from digging through the Kay-Funn
page on the FCC AM Query site--

Why, it's pre-sunrise and post-sunset authorization!

I'm not sure whether you use the 10 watts or 24 watts listed or
multiply that by the square root of the conversion factor (which
appears to be even less miniscule wattage), but either way it's
less of a signal than their 100 watts night power, so why bother?

The other thing I discovered is perhaps a pattern to their power
up/down movements. Last night they powered down from a
listenable signal in the 'Tuke to garbage at 6:59:57pm. This
morning it was power up at 5:59:57am, and tonight it was
power down again at 6:59:57pm.

So they appear to be operating from 6:00am to 7:00pm on something
more than night or pre-/post- power authorizations. Maybe 22 kw,
which should only be from 6:45am to 6:30pm in March?

I'll of course welcome our long-lost Kay-Funn ops buddy to come back
on the board and refute this.

Last Fall when the KFunn PD emailed the Nurse and me, I asked if 15~Ten was using pre and post authorizations. No response as he vowed never to post on this board again (was it something we said?). Your recent discovery is interesting on several fronts: 1) why would they use less than their 100 watt nightime authorization for pre and post hours? 2) Is 15 watts out of two sticks better than 100 out of four? and 3) everything seems to be based on what KGA in Spokane is doing. Nurse Jeff and I've heard that the same outfit that owns KGA owns 15~Ten in the Bay Area and wants to change KGA's nightime protected coverage. Perhaps there'd be a few crumbs for KFunn to consume...but what's the point. If they wanted better coverage, then they should have purchased Sports Parking Lot 8~Sixty from TMISU.

Maybe now that Ron controls the entire show, he's planning on moving the station to Mexico, where one can operate, IIRC, from 6am to 7pm, regardless of month or sun patterns.

Although I'm not too sure 860 gets much further south than KFNN, which does surpisingly well throughout the Camelback corridor at night. Speaking of 860, is Barna running that one, too?

Unless there's a fire sale on a decent AM facility, don't look for KFunn to make any move from 15~Ten. Their format is so unique it can be done at any dial position that has a decent signal 'til 5pm. No need to subscribe to Arbitron as the station has never been sold by ratings. It's a better than a niche...it's a boutique that caters to upscale listeners and advertisers. But of course none of this has anything to do with whether they're following their PSRA/PSSA authorization. And you know what Nurse Jeff and I think!
