KFNN Summer pre-sunrise authority?

Three times in the past week I happened to have been listening to KFNN at 5 a.m. when they have no signal for maybe 10 seconds, then come back with what appears to be full power. I know in the winter some stations have "pre-sunrise" authority to go to full power at 6 a.m. Is there a similar special authority for summer hours? I know that daylight power should start at 5:30 in July.

KFuNN seems to do whatever they want. Without consulting the resident expert on all things radio (and consumer of cui), Nurse Jeff and I somehow recall Pre Sunrise allows stations to increase power at 6am when local sunrise occurs later in the morning. Fall & Winter are typical Pre Sunrise months. Most stations power up with a reduced setting at 6am, then at local sunrise go full power. If you dig back in the archives to earlier this year, you'll find numerous instances where KFuNN was caught going to night power (100w) an hour and a half after local sunset. KFNX ColonBlow 11~hundred is another creative station when it comes to day and night power. Then there's the Gumpdusky lamptimer...but that's a whole other thread!

Several threads in fact. Why not this one too?

After ignoring Lumberyard 1440's comings and goings (that would be
sign-ons and sign-offs) for a while, I decided to scope 'em out again.

Apparently they brought in the calibration equipment, as the lamptimer
has been adjusted. Unfortunately it was the Gumpdusky calibration
equipment, and--now don't get ahead of me here ;D--it's been reset
almost as far wrong in the other direction!

The "just cut the carrier, screw the ID" sign-off tonight was at 7:49:26,
over four minutes late.

"Late on, late off." Hey, why not The Clapper? Couldn't be any worse
than their lamptimer...of course you'd need a live person to clap. ;)

Just bring in the Nearly Bald One's fake studio audience...that'll have Lumberyard 14~Forty on and off at the correct times! Seeing that you're doing such a stand-up job monitoring the market's one and only daytimer, why not set the alarm clock earlier and see what KFuNN is up to around 5am? Nurse Jeff and I suspect you'll find something interesting to report!

I think the remote control (if I remember correctly) had an issue or two with monsoon season and power outages... Some days the remote control wouldn't switch over unless it was re-started at the studio end. That is if they still have the same remote that probably is 20+ yrs old.

Maybe Mr. RC actually bought a new one and the power/pattern has to be changed in 2 steps, as in one turned off then turn on the other xmtr.
(older solid state transmitters) ???

New month, new sign-on/off times--5:45am-7:15pm.

So how did our perps do tonight?

KFNX had already dropped power at 7:12.

KFNN was basically inaudible in the 'Tuke a few seconds past 7:15.

Which brings us to Lumberyard 1440. 7:18:10. Last time I got
a read on KAZG in July (23rd), they ran 4+ minutes past their
7:45 sign-off. Tonight, 3+ minutes late.

"Gumpdusky's lamptimer--with Genuine Drift built in." ;)

When I checked yesterday (Aug 1) KFNN was already full power about 5:26.

But KAZG didn't sign on until 5:52 a.m.

During the months of April to August the sunrise is before 6 am MST KFNN must suspend PSR/PSSA (Northerly biased Directional) to protect a station in the PDT Time zone and cannot go to intermediate power to prevent interfering with the other stations as their Directional signal could interfere with the other station. possibly Spokane's 50KW station By the direction of the 2nd tower.

I believe August is a 5:45a sunrise.

If sunrise is at or before 6:00am you don't need to use the PSA
since you can go to day power at that time:

April 6:00
May 5:30
June 5:15
July 5:30
August 5:45

I can't recall if the PSSA is to get you to 6:00 or 7:00pm (perhaps
the Old Gringo can confirm which), but in these same months you
get to least 7:00 on day pattern:

April 7:00
May 7:15
June/July 7:45
August 7:15

Now if we were on daylight-saving time... ;)

Even if KFuNN was "accidently" using their PSSA this month, you probably wouldn't hear much of a difference. Their night authorization is 100w through four sticks. The PSSA is for 10 or fewer watts through two sticks. Nurse Jeff and I've suspected that whoever powers up to 22k before sunrise aint using a watch set to MST.
