KFNN's Goin' For A Record

Once again tonight (11/5), KFNN 15~Ten hasn't powered down to 100 watts at local sunset (5:30pm). The much promoted automated system is stuck on 6:57pm. Since monitoring the station last Thursday, Nurse Jeff and I've logged five full days of full power for an hour and a half after sunset. Wonder how that Ontario, CA station feels about 22,000 watts hitting them in PMD?

Meanwhile, KFNX 1100 had--when I checked around 5:40--
already dumped it down to a thou.

Tomorrow (Tuesday) may be the real test as they air the
Colon Blow Cocoa Show in the early evening.

Earlier I tuned in Lumberyard 1440 about 5:15 to see when they
would shut off the buzz saw, and that occurred at 5:19:37.

It went something like..."you're gonna cry, ninety-six tears...
you're gonna cr...(static)" Sans legal ID of course.

So if I interpolate the still-drifting lamptimer correctly, KAZG
ought to sign on--or ramp up to full power--Tuesday morning
about 6:50.

Tuesday November 6:

The Lumberyard was already off when I checked a bit after 5:30,
and KFNX 1100 was on night pattern (also during two subsequent
checks at 7:05 and 9:25).

As for KFNN 1510, once again they did not power down until 6:57.

Is this the most pressing issue of the day? Like anyone listens, who the hell cares..

ummmm....you're right. Lumberyard 14~Forty is the most pressing!

But the fact remains that KFNN's PD said his station doesn't flaunt nighttime power settings the way KFNX does. The Nurse Jeff and I respond accordingly: Liar, Liar..pants en fuego! There are other stations on or adjacent to the 15~Ten frequency that are being affected by KFNN's inability to reduce from 22,000 watts to 100 watts at night.

Exactly! Seems to keep a few posters busy though. I want to dominate a radio board when I grow up.

Remember the old adage--if a thread doesn't interest you,
then don't read it. I do just that with any threads involving
"energyless, ratings-challenged rimshots from Payson." ;D

Now back to our insurrection, which is already in progress...

Wednesday November 7:

Did not catch Lumberyard 1440 cutting the plate voltage,
but they were not on at 6:55. Assume 5:20 or so based
on recent days.

Our KFNN buddy is conspicuous by his recent absence as
the the saga of our newest illegal power alien--1510--
continues, with yet another "it should have been 5:30 but
it was actually 6:57" occurrence.

Meanwhile, over at Power Blaster 1100...while they played
by the rules last evening, tonight they've yet to power down
as of 7:15. Oh, and their 7:00 legal ID was interesting:
"KFNX news/talk radio 1100 Cave Creek/Phoenix." Not legal,
but interesting. (Psst, Francis, here's a free tip to show I
don't totally despise your operating and engineering functions ::)
--take out the "news/talk radio," you can leave in the "1100.")

The Nurse and I caught Lumberyard 14~Forty's "pull the plug" signoff Wednesday afternoon at 5:18pm. They cheated us out of 12 minutes of more music pow-pow-power. But I imagine they made up the difference in their SRP bill ::)

KFNN switched from 22kw to 100w at 6:57pm tonight...making it seven straight days in a row. If it wasn't for that smart mouthed PD, we'd probably never notice they're just as flagrant as KFNX.

Yep, I've mentioned that ID thing. You'd think people in the biz would understand the rule. OK, so no one (even the commission) cares, but how about doing it right just for your own entertainment? I think 1100 and probably 1510 have STLs that adjust the power automatically, and if whoever's on duty doesn't check, it may not power down some times. I mean, with the vast population of people listening to AM radio after 7pm ;), who want care enough to bother?

Okay folks...move along, nothing more to see here. KFNN finally figured out how to power down at sunset and the Nurse and I are pleased to report we heard at least three different radio stations on 15~Ten around 6pm Thursday night. As far as Lumberyard 14~Forty goes, the drifting lamptimer got closer to 5:30pm today and that means we'll be cheated out of more worn out oldies a little earlier on Friday. Glad we could be of assistance. Now we rejoin TMISU in their Talk The Vote journey on 92~Three.

They must have just set the clock back, as Sunday morning they were full power at 6 a.m.

As I write this at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, KAZG is still dead air. Time to wake up!

The only thing that's coming out of the Lumberyard this morning
(besides 2x4s and caulk) is a carrier on with dead air--at least
during a "listen sweep" from 8:55 to 9:05.

DAMN! Nurse Jeff and I were really looking forward to hearing Brown Eyed Girl for the 8,745th time this year!

No sweat, just tune over to 94.5 where it is, has been, and always will be,
in power rotation. Except on KOOL '70s Sundays of course. ;)

Somewhat surprisingly, KOOL has recently been giving Domino a number
of spins from the old hard drive.

Who's the new voice (Mike Patrick?) I've heard on KOOL the past two
Saturdays. 1-4pm I think. It's as if they took the midday and afternoon
slots and shoehorned in another voice. Why--is he auditioning?

(Here's where I whine about Saturday morning syndication again...)
If PD Kris is adding a new weekend voice--or even if he isn't--KOOL ought
to be live 6-10am Saturdays. Though not as big as Saturday middays or
afternoons, it's still a rather hefty weekend daypart and shouldn't be
relegated to (recorded) syndicated product.

Another F for KFNN as power down Wednesday night (11/14) came at 6:07pm, some 37 minutes after they were supposed to go to 100 watts. The Nurse and I listened closely after the pattern/power change and it took over five minutes before the signal went to crap. Guess those 22,000 watts have to dissapate somewhere. Well at least now we know what the F in KFNN stands for!

Maybe the new Kay-Funn slogan is--in a nod to KT'R--
"power drop on the sevens."

You'll recall earlier in November they were doing a
"screw 5:30, we like 6:57 better" routine for a while.

Akbar logged them at 6:07 a couple of nights ago, and
tonight (Friday) the power drop was again at 6:07.

BTW, a check at 5:40 had both Kay-Fenn-Ex (1 kw) and
the Lumberyard (off) as legal.

Mike Patrick's been on more than that on KOOL... before doing the Saturdays, he was on 9pm-Midnight on 70's Sundays for at least two or three Sundays in a row.

Must be that "automated" power reduction program again. Afterall, KFNN's PD told us how professional he is in running that operation and anonymous comments from non-radio people was the reason he hated this board. Fact remains, KFNN gets a big F for consistently failing to reduce power at sunset. Not being morning people, Nurse Jeff and I wonder how early they power up the 22kw at sunrise???

I try to listen to the "Morning Breakfast" program which starts at 6 a.m.. They are pretty regular on powering up at 6 a.m. I assume they have a pre-sunrise authority. Anyone one else with pre-sunrise authorization?

Saturday November 17:

Lumberyard 1440 was off at 5:28, following an interesting handoff
of the ASU women's basketball game to KDUS 1060 for a JIP as
KAZG had to cut the plate (which they did sans ID of course).
I guess since they had the backup station they didn't see it
necessary to stay on after 5:30 with 52 watts.

KFNN did their drop--again--at 6:07. Another VIOLATION stamp.
What is the typical fine for repeated disregard of power/pattern
changes? $4000? Let's see, four grand times X-number of days...

But the biggest illegal power alien tonight is KFNX 1100. At 8:45
they're running a U of A basketball game and I guess that's just
sooooo important (mind you, I'm not taking sides between ASU
and UA here) that they're still running 50 gallons.

Hey Francis, do you know what your minions are supposed to do
at 5:30pm in November? Every day, not just when you feel like it?
Guess not.
