KFNX Alleged Power Violations

In the "Lamp Timer/Gumpdusky/KDUS" thread I noted four recent
occurrences where KFNX 1100 Cave Creek was late dropping power
by anywhere from 7-11 minutes (times logged from an atomic clock).

Many of you will recall their past indiscretions of 1) blasting 50 gallons
at night, and 2) the @#$% language from the late-night headbangers.

Didn't they get fined for at least some of that nonsense?

Tonight's power violation was ridiculous. They should have dropped
to 1 kw at 1915, however this didn't occur until 2037:55 (again from
an atomic clock).

As for the language issues... Other stations in Phoenix have been guilty of having some harsh language in the overnight time frame. KUPD used to be a regular "violator" of the 'seven dirty words'. The excuse I used to hear is "hey, it's safe harbor after 10pm", and while that's technically true--I seriously doubt that company policies would support such language, but I guess it really is true that no one listens after 10pm :D.

Nowadays, all the FCC cares about is E.A.S. and public files. If IBOC poses no interference problem, running too much power certainly is fine and dandy.

Come on. You actually had time "via the atomic clock" to calculate 7-11 minutes of extra power??

Why do you think they call it an atomic clock? It's dead-on accurate, so yes, I can
tell when slipshod-run radio stations don't power down at or near the time they're
supposed to each month (and 7-11 minutes late is not "near" much less "at").

KFNX must have an atomic clock since they are able to hit CNN at the TOH, so they
also ought to use it to power down at the specified monthly time (7:15, not 8:37).

I have contacted UPS and I'm having the same "atomic clock" shipped to your living room, via KFNX petty cash...

Don't need it, I already have two, plus an atomic watch. Time geek and proud of it. ;D
Besides, one needs more than the $3.24 in the KFNX petty cash drawer to buy it.

Come on, grow up. Who cares about a little extra wattage between friends.

As I noted in one of the posts in the Lumberyard 1440 mega-thread:

There are still a few rules left in FCC-land that are regularly enforced. One is tower lighting, another is EAS gear, and another is, oh yeah, power/pattern violations.

(And from what I've seen recently, also a station's public file.) If a station breaks the
power rules too often it just may get nabbed by Uncle Charlie. I'm sure we've all seen
the black 1951 Ford sedan with the weird loop antenna on the roof and the two guys
inside wearing fedoras...driving around metro Phoenix at all hours. ;)

"A little extra wattage between friends"? That can be construed as a blatant statement
that a station willfully disregards the caveats of its license and wants the public to just
wink their eye in return and let it ride. Well, KFNX is not my friend--it's had a number
of well-known past indiscretions, so why should I cut it any slack? I doubt if KNZZ 1100
Grand Junction is KFNX's friend either.

...I'd have to guess that your as virgin as 100% virgin olive oil direct from Italy shipped in an uncontaminated vacuum.

I think you have me confused with the late EVOO Radio Network. ???

Oldiesfan- I used to work at KFNX. I remember you very well. If Im not mistaken, you called my program director over this exact subjuct. He let me have a copy. Chopped it up and made it at least 2 or 3 liners. It is AM radio. Why not let people express themselves? I just think that really is not the issue, the issue is you are retired. Retired aka Hall Montier for AM radio-waves everywhere. God bless you.

It amazes me that AM is still around. Do I think it will still be around in 10 years? My guess is yes....not!
