KFNX ROADRUNNERS

Minor league hockey's PHOENIX ROADRUNNERS will air on Talk KFNX-A/PHOENIX this season, with former ATLANTIC CITY BOARDWALK BULLIES voice DAN WEISS handling play-by-play. The ROADRUNNERS join the ECHL this season, resurrecting the ROADRUNNERS nickname used by the city's former WHA and minor league franchises and playing in AMERICA WEST ARENA, the former home of the market's NHL franchise, which moved to suburban GLENDALE.

I thought all Jerry Colangelo-owned teams ended up on 620 or 860. There's no room on KMVP for them?

There's a bit of false advertising in their announcement. They call KFNX a 50,000 watt station. Not when the games are going on, they're not. Since most games will start at 7 PM, KFNX will spend most or all of the games as a 1000 watt station that can't be heard in much of the city.

Speaking of the Roadrunners, it looks like Colangelo is trying pay-per-view again. The team will be streaming most of its games on the internet for $6 per game. All 36 home games and 25 road games will be televised this way.

Robert Sarver is the majority owner of the Roadrunners, as well as the Managing Partner of the Suns and Mercury.

Minor league team.

Minor league station.

I wonder if Sarver knows how crappy their nighttime signal is in much of the Valley?

That said, I wish the Roadrunners well on the ice.

Correct, but from what I understand, Colangelo (who is still CEO of the Suns/Mercury organization until Sarver pays him the rest of the money for the team) has been overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Roadrunners along with team president Claude Lemieux. Sarver supposedly isn't all that involved with the hockey operation.

Either way, I doubt that too many people will pony up $6 for AA-level hockey on an internet stream. And there won't be too many listeners on KFNX either - even in areas that can actually hear them at night.

Prediction: This will not have a happy ending.

Best of luck to the Roadrunners. They deserve to succeed after the NHL fiasco.

6$ a game on the net is cheaper than going to AWA (parking, tickets, food, etc)

MLB.tv is $15 per month or $4 a day, and that's for the entire league other than teams that are blacked out in your area.

$6 a game is way too much for a lower-minor-league hockey team. It's even too much for the Coyotes or any other NHL team.

Look at it this way. The minor league hockey team isn't going to get it's games on broadcast TV. So this will give it's rabid fans (both of them) an opportunity to watch the games from home if they can't go or if it's a road game. It's definitely not a cash cow for the team.

It's a big difference from when the Suns tried it. They had no problem finding a place on TV for their games.

Maybe KFNX will bring back the headbanger show dude
to board-op the hockey games...and he'll once again
"conveniently forget" to power down the XMTR ;-)

Coyotes TV/Radio (was KFNX ROADRUNNERS)

Do the Coyotes even have their TV and radio deals finalized for the upcoming season? Despite the fact that Wayne Gretzky is coaching this year, has the NHL damaged its reputation so much that a station like KDKB won't want to broadcast its games anymore?

As for TV, I suspect there won't be any over-the-air games this year.

What is the big problem with the KFNX/Roadrunners deal? Their signal, while not as good as KTAR/KFYI (or non-players like 1580), isn't really that bad throughout nearly everything east of I-17, and does make its way to the west side as well. Didn't their auction package show engineering workups to get 4kw or so at night?

Besides, bigger teams are on stations with lesser ratings. While it is relatively standard practice for MLB teams to pay for clearance on top stations in order to sell a majority of the spots, but the Devil Rays pay a decent rate to non-rated WHNZ/Tampa. They, of course, are a major league team, and albeit the fact that their performance may not represent such, you would think they could do better than an ECHL team.

AFAIK, the current deals are still in effect. I haven't heard anything other than Darren Pang replacing Charlie Simmer as analyst. The team's website shows 2-year-old info, talking about the stations' 8th season (which was 2003-04).

The other thing to think about in all this is that KFNX has a decent stream. So while it might not be picked up in certain parts of the Valley, if a fan is diehard enough and doesn't want to watch the streaming video, they can listen to the audio stream.

Also, I really don't believe that streaming video is good enough yet to justify $6. If I paid that and had continuous buffering, I would go postal! Just a thought.

I wonder if there is an "early out" clause for any of these deals? If you think KDKB is struggling right now, wait until they have to air Coyotes games after all that the NHL has gone through over the past year. Same for TV games on KASW, where even the lowest rated WB programs could probably do better.

Roadrunner prices are ridiculous, especially considering it's ECHL hockey (approximately equal to or lower than in value, than AA minor league baseball), for both ticket prices and the $6 per game. I realize that they're only seating lower bowl at AWA (which is a terrible hockey venue, except for a few seats), but at the cost of a decent seat (between the blue lines), you can get a cheaper ticket for NHL action at the Glendale Arena with the discounts that went into effect (again, considering between the bluelines, upper deck).

And as far as TV goes, DirecTV hasn't announced the revival of NHL Center Ice but it's $15 per month for 40+ games a week.

It'll be nice to hear Roadrunner hockey on the radio when I'm tooling around town (and depending on which part of town…), but I'd venture that the staying power of this franchise isn't great at all, and I'm a rabid hockey fan.
