KFNY AM 1440 Riverside,CA Flipped

did they have the KFNY calls before flipping to comedy?
K-FUNNY calls prior to the flip...how about that? (apologies to Mel Allan)

This format DOES NOT WORK. Comedy World, All Comedy Radio and National Lampoon Radio all failed for a reason. Playing clips of comedy over and over again is not the same as playing a song over and over again. Comedy works because of the surprise of a punchline. No one wants to hear the same jokes over and over. All Comedy Radio bought time on KLSX for a while on the weekends and it FLOPPED with a strong signal...and that's when Stern was still on....this won't work.

Yes, they were KFNY during the last week of the Spanish-language format.

Too bad I can't get this station from my area. Look like I could only listen when I drive to Vegas... :p

Yes, Spanish oldies in that market, even on an upper-end AM signal, does indeed do quite well.

As far as I recall 1440 has been some kind of Spanish format for many years; who owns this station and why did they think this would be a good idea, especially in that market?

Wasn't 92.7 in Thousand Oaks a comedy station once upon a time?

Also, this 1440 AM, didn't Dick Clark used to own this station back in the 1970s?

Surprisingly... Clear Channel.

850 KMDY was the comedy station out of Thousand Oaks. Yes, Dick Clark owned 1440 KPRO in the 1970's. It was big band and standards with heavy local news in morning drive.

took a brief listen just now, I give it a month. (In fact I'll wager that it's just a stunt, even I know from the other thread on that topic, that stunting is supposed to be passe)

No wonder CC is in trouble!

I doubt this is stunting given 1440 is feeding into this new nationwide comedy network.

I was unaware Clear Channel owned this station. Could it be possible CC is preparing to unload this station and they're trying to make 1440 appear "better" to potential buyers?

So after all, could this be the big format flip, and the joke/punchline was a not so major station is flipping to a comedy station?

This could also be a door-opener for becoming a new Inland Empire outlet for sports teams. 1440 in various previous formats has a long history of sports.

All Sports formats have already bombed twice in the IE. I wouldn't take a bet on there being a third try.
